Loft conversion, third storey, fire doors

Yep. We had a loft conversion done 2 years ago and due to the character features of the original doors in the house the BCO stated if we put a interconnected smoke detector system in every room (apart from toilet and bathroom), it will comply.

    Door Size

Another thought. If the doors have some glazing in it is there any requirements for building regs (i.e. must be toughened glass)??

    Door Size

Hi Folks, A quick question, Is there a minimum door opening size requirement for a new extension build (internal door). I've just seen some doors i want and am not sure if i should buy 30 or 33" doors. Do not have the building reg drawings to hand (i presume it is specified on them). thanks

    Quick question on Downlights

Thanks. Don't get me wrong i'm sure that the plans have the correct lights on them its just that we are away at the moment and can't refer to them. We just saw some on clearance in B&Q which seemed a bargain, 10 Chrome downlights for £15. So the Fire Rating is for the intergrity of the...

Insulation in loft - problems with condensation

We had exactly the same problem a year or so ago. We had the loft insulated and over the course of the next 6 months we had bad condensation and mould grouth on the edges of the upstairs celings. Called out Eaga as i have small children and the promptly fitted soffit vents. We shall now...

    Cavity wall question

Thanks. Can you tell me the reasoning behind drytherm being better rather than using the Kingspan method?

    Cavity wall question

Sorry to highjack the thread but what would you say is a better route to go in a block cavity: 1) 100mm drytherm 2) 75mm Kingspan with a 25mm air gap?

    Extension external wall construction

Ok... After a long meeting this morning we have cleared a lot of questions with the builder, have much more confidence in him now. He has suggested the he will use 100mm thermalite block for inner and outer wall and he wants to put 75mm Kingspan in the cavity with a 25mm air gap. Does this...

    Extension external wall construction

Thanks. So it does sound like my potential builder knows his stuff... :) I just got very worried initially when he suggested single block, 70mm kingspan and battens as opposed to everyone else saying double block with a cavity.

    Extension external wall construction

I just dont want to be in a position afterwards regretting that for an extra £1500 that i could have had a warmer room.

    Extension external wall construction

The U value depends on the materials used and their thicknesses, not whether or not there is a cavity. As the solid wall would be using PIR board or similar - rather than Rockwool - then the U Value should be better, as long as the blocks are the same type. You can use Kingspan in a cavity but...

    Extension external wall construction

 Stupid me was presuming that the 215 blocks would also be used on the inside.... Im not a builder :(

    Extension external wall construction

Hi John, Thanks for the info. The builder stated that im probably looking at an extra £1500 to have the double block work. He only stated the single block option becasue the external dimension is only 3.5m and we would loose another 10inches if we had double block. My concern was that...

    Extension external wall construction

Hi New here and have read through quite a few posts and it has been really informative as we are planning a two storey extension. The first question(of many im sure) is that we are having an extension built shortly 3.5m x 7.1m (two storey), with the front of it being brick, cavity and then...
