    Shower options

I know nothing about mains pressure HW systems but you don't HAVE to have a 50 gal cold tank. What is the 50 gal tank you mention, under the cold tank? Is that the hot? At my old house I had a 25 gal cold tank. I fitted a 2 bar salamander pump. I did put a pressure restrictor in the...

    Concrete Window Sills

I believe you will have to cast it in situ. I don't think there is any standard type. I saw Tommy Walsh do this on the telly and it looked quite easy - but then so does everything else he does!

Is it possible to buy a quiet shower pump?

It's difficult to say what is "quiet". Quiet for one person might be noisy for abnother. The dBA figures that get quoted for pumps are of little help. I have just installed a 2 bar salamander pump. I consider it to be quiet. It's in the next room behind a stud partition wall and the noise...

    Big Garage Project

Shytalkz - Thanks for this info. - though it's probably a little more than I wanted the hear! As you suggest, I will get a structual engineer to provide some guidance. I am taking down an internal wall in the house (separate project) so will need to get calcs done for a beam. I'll ask...

    Big Garage Project

Thanks for all your advice gents. The original builder is the beneficiary of the covenant. However, I believe this covenant exists because it was a condition of the original planning consent that the trees along this boundary be preserved. When I spoke to the council (or was it my...

    shower tray upstands

You could use a teleseal but the method softus has described is spot on. I've done two like this and not had a leak.

    drilling wall tiles

For small holes up to about 10mm you need a tile bit. It's like a TCT spear point in a steel shaft. Put some tape on the tile, this helps to stop the bit skidding off before the hole gets started.

    Big Garage Project

Good tip, Mr M, I'll take the photos and use as a guide. And yes, understood that the floor will not be 'connected' to the walls or footings as such. Richard - Just building how I would like it, the garage would be just over 30m2. I thought that the only benefit of going under 30 was that...

    Big Garage Project

Many thanks, Noseall. Glad I haven't got to worry about that cavity tray lark! So I'll make the floor level the same as the existing drive way provided it's at least 100mm below FFL in the house. I've no doubt planning will be an issue for lots of reasons. I should be able to...

    Big Garage Project

I'm planning to build an attached garage to the side of my four bed detached 1990 built house. The house is on an end plot of a close and the side I am planning to build on borders the adjoining street, not the neighbour's house. Construction will be brick and concrete tiles on a pitched roof...

Fitting a new ceiling - HELP!

Sorry to butt-in but what do you do where both of the ceiling dimensions are greater than 2.4m? How do you deal with the non-feathered ends of the boards where they butt to another board end? Thanks.

I don't think you're missing anything. Just reduce to 15 before you go into the pump.

    ceiling decorating

You could try Polycell ceiling paint. You paint it into the cracks first then a couple of coats with a roller like normal emulsion. It dries like a rubber sheet, really flexible.

Ideal Classic boiler making grinding noises

I had this exact same thing at my mother's house. My brother put a few drops of oil on the fan spindle and it's been fine for about three weeks so far. I don't suppose it's a permanent fix but it's eeking more life out of the existing fan.

    Shower pump query..........

Excellent! Now I can have the extractor fan come on automatically when the shower is turned on. AC version here: http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/Industrial+Controls+&+Automation/Flow+&+Level/GTI+(GENTECH+INTERNATIONAL)/FS-05/displayProduct.jsp?sku=1006768

I go for all copper myself. Plastic is definately easier to fit mainly because it can easily go round gentle bends. Personally, its the O rings that are used in all the fittings that I don't fully trust. They have a finite life before they perish. OK, this might be donkeys years, and I'm...

    Please Help!

When you say the drainage pipe has sprung a leak, can you actually see a hole or split in it? If there is just water on the floor it's much more likely that the drain is blocked. However, this doesn't explain why the machine is not pumping out. If it is just the hose needs replacing you...

    Tiling around bathtub

Your approach sounds right. There is no way to waterproof your bathroom floor (including the tiled area) unless you "tank" it. This is what's done in wet rooms that are intended to have water pouring directly onto the floor. It would be way over the top for your bathroom. The floor tiles are...

    essex flange fitting

Wow, that's a shower head and a half! I don't know of any formula for deciding on pump pressure/flow rate, but for that head I would go large! I've installed two Salamander RSP 75s 2.25 bar (at my old house and new house) both with Mira Gem 88 valves. I used the standard Mira head on the...
