    Building control

I submitted building notice for extension to the council and the person we were allocated is being quite unreasonable with requirements (apparently we are unlucky as this person is known to be difficult). Is it possible just to pay private approved inspector another lot of money for a separate...

    Structural calcs for roof lights

Thanks. Thats what I thought as well. Architect told me he spoke to structual engineer who was concerned on lateral load pushing on main house (extension is built with pitched roof) due to the weight of the roof lights. I am bit confused as just the tiles on their own are 50kg per sq meter which...

    Structural calcs for roof lights

I am having an extension sized at 7m x 3m with pitched roof with 2x fixed roof lights sized at 2m wide x 1.4m long (triple glazed & each weighing around 150kg). Does anyone think if this will require any structural calcs due to size and weight or can I get away without doing these?

Cavity Wall insulation with poly beads

Thanks, for comparison my house has 50mm cavity and was built in 1937 so plenty of stuff in cavities.

Cavity Wall insulation with poly beads

I had cavity walls insulated with ecobead platinum last week. The work was done from inside as we have no plasterboard up and the installers did it in about 2 hours. The problem I have is that they have left quite large gaps between the drilling points they used - especially downstairs. In...

    'Short' WC

The door option: The room is on mid landing half way up the stairs so while it would be amusing, the risk is that you knock someone down the stairs every time you open the door. The high level cistern option: Good idea and I already thought of that, problem is that its again room position...

    'Short' WC

Not possible - there is a door at one end which has to open inside. Got no pictures handy but below is ascii art impression with SH - shower, WC - toilet, S - sink :o) [code:1] _______________ |SH| WC S | |SH| WC | |SH| \ | |SH_________\_| [/code:1]

    'Short' WC

I have a small bathroom (2.46mx1m) that I would like to install a WC a shower and a sink. WC would go in the middle between shower at one end and a small sink on the other and so would require walking around the toilet to reach the shower. Does anyone know a toilet with least depth that I...

Insulating plasterboard thoughts on 1930s house

Are there any companies that install underfloor insulation? I am not workshy and it doesn't sound complex but I have too much on as it is.

Insulating plasterboard thoughts on 1930s house

Its too late - cavity got filled this morning. The only question left is whether to install insulating plasterboard or not. With regards to comment about insulating under floor boards, I was under the impression they have to ventilate from below and to do something that will stop that will...

Insulating plasterboard thoughts on 1930s house

We have 1930s house that is having cavity wall installation (EPS beads) on 50mm cavity. This is supposed to bring the U-value on walls from 1.603 to 0.498 As plaster is off inside, I am wondering if its worth having insulating plasterboard on external walls to further insulate? With just wet...

    Alarm diy installation planning

Many thanks - it helps a lot. Couple of questions 1) Why do you use dual tech sensor in kitchen? 2) If you have external siren unit to the front, why would you fit additional decoy siren unit too? Is the aim to conceal the main siren unit? (e.g. install it at the back or out of sight)?

    Alarm diy installation planning

I am planning to install new alarm system on my own with a little bit of help from electrician who is not overly familiar with alarms (i.e. good enough for drilling through joists and holding ladder but not much more). Its supposed to be a fairly simple installation on ground floor only with 1...

    Bathroom fan light

Not quite :). Its Zone 1 most of it but nothing is zone 0 - ceiling is heigh enough - its just that room is very narrow and quite long (2.46m x 1m)

    Bathroom fan light

Thanks. At the moment, there is nothing - no ceiling, just joists and opening above, its not been boarded yet. My two options are either separate fan which can then be removed or a fan and a light in which case I have to be able to remove the fan through the light fitting cutout.

    Bathroom fan light

Is there a light with inline fan that allows replacement of fan post installation (e.g. if it breaks) through the opening in ceiling? I would like to fit a light with integrated fan in a (tiny) bathroom. Problem is while there is plenty of space above ceiling to fit this now (ceilings...

    Preparing for cavity walls.

I am having cavity wall insulation put into the house next Friday. They are doing it prior to plasterers coming in and the walls are stripped to brick at the moment. This means that there are a lot of gaps on the inside walls, either loose bricks, gaps in mortar or gaps around the windows...

    Fitting Door Casings

The reason I am asking is that its so precise. Every door is exactly 5mm out on the bottom - not 4-7mm or anything else - its always 5mm out. It makes me think he's done it on purpose and was wondering if there is some sort of reason or method to this.

    Fitting Door Casings

its 5mm rather than 0.5mm. 76.5cm on the top, 77cm on the bottom - and some door ways couple of mm extra on top. Not sure if its generally acceptable tolerance level or if I am just fussy but to me that just seems sloppy.

    Fitting Door Casings

Nope, they were 3 foot casings so he had to cut the channel at 2ft6 on the top himself.
