I had cavity walls insulated with ecobead platinum last week. The work was done from inside as we have no plasterboard up and the installers did it in about 2 hours.

The problem I have is that they have left quite large gaps between the drilling points they used - especially downstairs. In once instance, a section of the wall which is 4.5m wide only had two points insulation at two ends of the room with 2.5m gap inside where they didn't inject anything. I asked them if they need to put in additional drill points and they said thats all they have to do.

Since then I downloaded BBA certificate which states that drilling points should be 600mm wide. Looking at ours, they are 700mm wide upstairs and obviously far wider downstairs. It further says maximum vertical space between points should be 2500mm - in our case they are closer to 3000mm due to height of ceilings.

Is it likely to be good enough or should I ask them back to do the job properly before we plaster the walls?

Unfortunately in my experience cavity wall insulation installers are some of the worst cowboys i have encountered and this is based on 3 different companies. They were not trying to screw me they just didn't give a toss. Much like bad window fitters.

In your installers defence though i would say that i have just finished on a very large house which had the cavities done with platinum bead and in places there were gaps of a couple of metres between injections. We have since cut 2 new doorways and 3 window openings in the walls due to some changes and there was no gaps anywhere to be seen. Although this house was just built with a 100mm cavity which was very clean.

Thanks, for comparison my house has 50mm cavity and was built in 1937 so plenty of stuff in cavities.

Don't worry too much about the [conservative] BRE guidance.

I'd be more worried about all these beads leaking out as soon as a gap occurs in the wall
