rsj / lintel - what size?

As for load calculations. The building control officer was happy with a Heavy Duty Lintel, becasue it was probably over specified. From my point of view, it was cheaper to buy it over specified, than it was to get the calculations done and then buy the right size one. Gary

rsj / lintel - what size?

As far as I understand it Concrete lintels are used for load bearing single skin internal walls, and 'Catnic' style lintels for Cavity walls. I made a new opening in an existing wall last year and installed a 'Heavy Duty Lintel'. I looked at the Catnic website for info and options, then...

Suspended floor above garage - Opinions

As per a number of my other posts, I am about to construct the suspended floor in my extension. Ground floor is garage, first floor will be bedrooms. The Joists are going to be 220mm deep, and the span between the walls is just under 3m. I want to go 400 or 600 joist spacing (rather than 450)...

    Building Joists in

Hi Knowledgable Ones. I am close to fitting the first floor joists in my extension, and the BCO has suggested a Ledger board & Hangers to attach to the existing gable end wall, and then to build the other ends into the new wall. I have 2 questions; 1 - The inner skin of the new wall is...

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

The 'Cold Rad' isn't new, but it has been relocated, and you are right - I did fit isolating valves as part of moving the pipes. That could be the whole cause of the problem - I think that I'll call in at screwfix on the way home tomorrow, and get a couple of full bore isolating Valves to fit...

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

PS, I have got some X100 to go in, once I am confident I won't be draining it down again .

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

Everything seemed OK, but the new rad still didn't seem to get as hot as it should. After leaving the X400 in for 4 weeks, I then did as much of a manual flush as I could. I turned off all of the rads and then one by one let them run on their own for about 20 minutes each. Sure enough...

How to vent the feed & Return pipes for a Rad fed from a

Does it sound like an air lock? Should there be some kind of a vent at the 90 degree bend to vertical?

How to vent the feed & Return pipes for a Rad fed from a

15mm pipe throughout ( that is what was in there originally). From the previous rad on the loop, the pipes run for 1.5m under the bedroom floor, then the vertical runs are about 2.2m. The the feed pipe runs for a further 1m along the wall, and the return pipe for 2.5m

How to vent the feed & Return pipes for a Rad fed from a

Hi Everyone I have got a problem with a new radiator that I have installed, in that it won't heat up more than luke warm. Here is the scenario; I have an open vented system, with the boiler and pump downstairs and the F&E tank in the loft. The flow and return pipes are all located in...

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

Thanks for all the help guys. A bit more flushing through, and everything is working OK. I'll get some X400 over the weekend, and set it to work.

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

Right I checked the F&E tank, and it was clean (ish) at the bottom. I tied up the ball cock, and then opened the drain cock on one of the down stairs rads, with the hose pipe attached and going out to the drive. I let it drain, while I went back upstairs and opened the bleed valve on the...

Thanks for the input guys. I'll check the feed tomorrow evening, and report back.

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

How can I check that? Some water has got through because the rads are warming up at the bottom, and if I open the new isolator valves water does flow through them. Could I open one of the radiator drain cocks and just let water flow through the system for a bit to try and dislodge whatever...

Drained CH System down, and now rads are only warm

Hi Oh Great Knowledgeable Ones. I am no plumbing expert, but have moved a few few rads in my time without too much trouble. However, this time the job hasn't gone according to plan. I have got an open system, with a cold water tank and heating expansion tank in the loft, hot water tank in...

Advice needed - Swapping stairs around between 2 walls.

Yes I am. There are landings at both ends and along one side which give enough space, and a bedroom door that can be used during the lifting sequence. Also, the property is 1960's so no problems with changing the angle. I will measure everything up many more times before committing.

Advice needed - Swapping stairs around between 2 walls.

New stairs can go in through the front door on their side, lifted up onto the landing. On the landing they can be rotated to flat, and lowered in from above.

Advice needed - Swapping stairs around between 2 walls.

Guys I need some tips relating to switching my stairs round. I need to swap my existing stairs around for 2 reasons. 1) We have repositioned the front door, and it is nicer to come into the bottom of the stairs rather than underneath them. 2) I am converting the loft, and having the...

Moving Soil Vent - Help needed

Phew, time to get the angle grinder out now. Terminating the vent 900mm above the upstairs window will be a bit ugly. But I'll have a chat with the BCO and see if we can come up with an alternative solution.

Moving Soil Vent - Help needed

Sorry I should have added, that when the toilet is flushed, the water goes along the channel at the bottom of the manhole, and when the sinks/dishwasher/bath/washing machine empty that water comes out of the channel that curves in from the side.
