    2G 2W switch to replace 2G 1W switch?

I was about to change a 2 gang 1 way light switch in the lounge for a brushed steel one. I think I have got a 2 way switch though. Is it still possible to use this as a one way switch though? the new switch has terminals marked L, L1 and L2 for each switch. I have got 4 wires to connect (2...

    Connecting Radiator

Hi, just after a little help. I was supposed to have a plumber come around to plumb in a radiator today but did not turn up! I think I am going to have to do it myself now. I have put the radiator on the wall and the pipes are ready in the right location, just capped off. I have been...

    Splitting lighting circuit

Thanks for the information. Hopefully I should find enough info from that previous thread. I knew I was going to have to pull floorboards so that is not a problem.

    building with breeze block

If you are building it double skin with a 100mm cavity (to comply with building regs) the inner skin will have to be thermalites due to thermal efficiency. The outer skin does not have to be breeze blocks. I used dense concrete blocks on the outer skin of ours as they are stronger and about the...

    Splitting lighting circuit

Hi all, I am splitting a room into 2 rooms and need to split the lighting for the 2 individual rooms. The current room already has 2 switches (1 in either of the new rooms). So I just need to add an extra light fitment in one of the new rooms and have each switch operating each individual light...

    Shed footings next to tree!!??

Yeah, I think even if there is some kind of movement to the footings or cracking it shouldn't effect the the timber much. I might just put in some steel mesh to reinforce the footings though. Should be safe then. Thanks.

    Extension OK?

I have just finished building our extension, so hopefully can give some ideas. Firstly you will need to make sure it has been signed off by a building inspector and complies with all safety and energy legislations. The roof looks Ok as far as flat roofs go. You will need to make sure it is...

    house bricks too small?

Yep, metric bricks are quite a bit smaller (215x102x65mm). I think it should be quite easy to find imperial ones, they will just cost more. I have got loads in my garden as I have just removed a wall. If you really need them I shall be visiting the Midlands next weekend.

    Shed base

I am just about to start building my shed (well a bit more than just a shed tbh). It is going to be 4.8 x 3.6 meters. the base is going to be made using 8x2" timber and the walls are going to be 4x2" and fully insulated. For my base I am putting in 5 strip footings (about a foot deep) and on...

    Skimming stud wall.

Thanks for the advice. I do think the second option sounds quite long-winded, but i think it is probably the way i shall do it. Many thanks.

    Skimming stud wall.

Hi, just a quick question regarding skimming a new stud wall. I am just about to half a room by building a stud wall using 100 x 47mm timber and 12.5mm plasterboard. I am just a bit unsure of how to skim upto the existing skimmed walls at the perpendicular. Normally I guess you would tape the...

    Aerated blocks / Fixings

Thanks for the help. I actually went and got some polyester resin which comes in a tube of two compounds which mix together as you squirt into the drill hole. I had also bought some 8mm nylon plugs with the little flanges on them. I guess this should do the trick.

    Aerated blocks / Fixings

Hi all, hope somebody can help with this one. I am just starting to fit a kitchen and have got around to fitting the wall units. The walls in the kitchen are thermalite blocks with a plaster finish (not boards). The cupboards are the 1000mm units, so quite heavy. I am just not sure which is the...

    PVA and plastering.

I am PVAing at the moment and according to the instructions it should be 5 parts PVA to 1 part water 24 hours before plastering then 3 parts PVA to 1 part water about 1/2 hour before plastering. However, I am plastering with hardwall onto thermalite blocks at the mo.

    Advice on plastering coats please!!

Well, either brave or stupid, but you have got to try these new skills. I never thought a few months ago that I would have been able to build an extension single handed. But, I guess this is where sites like this come in so useful.

    Advice on plastering coats please!!

Hi all. I am at the stage of plastering the new kitchen extension I have just built. I have got 3 walls to plaster with hardwall, ceiling to skim with multi-finish and one dry-lined wall to skim. I was going to plaster the 3 walls I need to plaster and leave them to go off before skimming...

    Running electrics to outbuilding.

Thanks for the replies. The run for the cable is aprox. 25m to the shed. In terms of uses, I will be having 2 lights and about 3 double sockets for using power tools and a heater a fridge and a freezer. Is this quite a lot for a shed? I have no idea as to whether the kitchen is RCD...
