    sounds like your after lining paper - go for the thicker stuff - can't remember what the weight/grade is but goto any shed and ask, they'll point you to it. as for painting the paper does tend to suck the paint in so don't paint onto it with your expensive stuff, give it a coat with cheap...

    LOL - yeah i realised that - though could've been quite unfortunate if i didn't know that :shock: bathjobby - cheers for the suggestion but luckily (or 'unlucky' depending how you think) that's it's not required as we had a new boiler put in a couple of months back.

    thankyou gents i can relate to all that - the stove is only small with the flu exhaust 4/5 of the way up so you can easily fill it up to the flu (it's a top loader) - yep def. left the air holes open so the flames go up the flu - yep the wood is very very dry - 90 year old floor boards...
