    Workmate spare parts

Thank you, Big All. The only place I've found so far, that sells these things, is ToolShop Direct (and they sell every conceivable spare for every Workmate ever made), but they charge £3 each. I've tried many outlets like B&Q, Homebase, and Jewson branches, but no luck with these.

    Workmate spare parts

Does anyone know if the early version of the plastic grip (small black triangular looking thing) is interchangeable with the more recent version (larger orange block thing)? Do any of the well-known high street merchants sell these spare parts?

Designing random tile pattern - odd or even?

I had to do this for a customer, but with 3 colours. At no point was there to be more than 3 tiles of the same colour adjoining - and then not in a row or column, only in an L, and every column and every row had to have more or less the same number of each colour tile. Finally, any regular...

    The only tools you need

Yes, it's called "The Law of Spacial Waste", which states that "Unwanted items will always accumulate to fill any storage space completely, however large or small it is" This law works in direct proportion to the number of times you visit your local recycling centre. i.e. The more rubbish you...

    The only tools you need

I have decided to review the contents of my toolbox. I now only carry 2 tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, I use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, I use the duct tape.

    Vent pipe valve

There is a pipe already there. It runs up the wall and has a swan neck to take it out of the conservatory roof. I want to replace the roof, and without the pipe, it will be sooooo much easier. So, I want to terminate the pipe beneath the ceiling and put a valve on it. I assume the system is...

    Vent pipe valve

What's the name of the air admittance valve that you can fit on the top of 100mm waste/vent pipe, to avoid extending the vent pipe through conservatory ceilings? It allows air in, but doesn't allow jobby smells out. And do they work?

    Part p query

What I mean is, if I fit a kitchen of project value, say, £8,000, but it includes changing one socket on an existing circuit, then strictly speaking I cannot do this and I lose the whole contract for the sake of one socket change. Whereas, other fitters would say nothing and just do it. So it's...

    Part p query

I asked our local authority this very question. They said that they had no qualified people to do testing and that it would have to sub-contracted. I would have to get it tested by someone else and pay LABC fee for their report. :? I would venture to suggest that no LABC anywhere has qualified...

    Part p query

I'll just send them photocopies of all the "skilled services" ads in our local free paper, and of our local Yellow Pages

    Part p query

Reply to Ban: Registering for Certification requires the following: 1 - Attend training course 2 - Buy test equipment 3 - Pay annual fee to who ever the certification body is 4 - Arrange for test equipment to be calibrated annually In round figures, this will cost: 1 - £600 2 - £300 3...

    Part p query

No, il78, I wasn't suggesting any underhanded tactics  but trying to establish how kitchen fitters and the like get around this Part p business. There's a huge number of kitchen and bathroom fitters around here, and there is no way on earth that they are all Part P approved. So how are...

    Part p query

What's to stop anyone doing electrical work and then getting a qualified electrician to test and certify the work to Part p regs? For example, I might want to rewire my house in stages, room by room as I decorate each room. Once the whole house is done, then I pay someone to test and certify...

    Which tile adhesive?

Excellent reply, pittstop, and I had largely concluded this, but why? What are the technical reasons why "bag" shouldn't be used on walls?

    Which tile adhesive?

I only use good quality tile adhesive, from Bal or Granfix. Question is, what criteria should I use in deciding whether to use ready-mixed stuff (like Bal Blue Star), or mix-in-the-bucket powder variety?

    Hardwood architraves wanted

Thank you JasonB. I've tried TP, Jewsons, and other local merchants, but they all say that they have to buy in a billet of timber, make up suitiable cutters for the cross-section I want (which is standard softwood architrave pattern), and machine up what I want. This makes it prohibitively...

    Hardwood architraves wanted

Anyone tell me where I can obtain hardwood architraves, cills, and 1"x0.5" stripwood? Needs to be Sapele (if that's how you spell it) or similar in lengths of up to 2.2m (but not a vast quantity, I might add). It's for repairs to hardwood-frame in which UPC double glazing is mounted. Nobody...

    DIYnot meet

That's 7 without knowing where. That might be 6 in John O'Groats and 1 in South Devon. It'll probably go down to 2 if it's miles away from the majority and at an inconvenient time. We really ought to set a date and location well in advance then interested parties can plan ahead. In the...

    Liability for faulty kitchen worktops

Thanks for all your answers on this one. In fact, I'd already accepted the fact that it was down to me. I'm going to pay the fitter for refitting the new worktop which has been replaced by Howdens FOC and without question. Customer is quite happy, and I have learnt a lesson.

    DIYnot meet

OK. We've got Breezer in Aruba and kevplumb in Afghanistan, and me in South Devon. That makes "central" to be somewhere in the middle of Africa. Kendor, could you make that in your lunch hour? No doubt the moderators are reading this: Perhaps they could suggest a UK location which might...
