TVs killing toddlers - does GMTV need banning?

The TV has some places at the back for attaching brackets. I think I may just put some decent plugs into the wall and fix it with picture wire or something. GMTV :x

TVs killing toddlers - does GMTV need banning?

I hate GMTV. Every poorly reported scare story ends up with a discussion between me and the wife. The latest is on the story of a TV falling and killing a toddler. From what I can gather, most of these stories are TVs on a chest of drawers and the toddler has pulled the chest of drawers...

Help on choice of PVR or DVD recorder

I think recording to DVD is a bit old fashioned now. It's one thing if you want to play DVDs. I've been keeping an eye on the Humax boxes for a while. My concern is that an HD version will be out soon when they finally decide the freeview HD formats and make it a bit out of date. I think...

Pulling new coaxial through with old cable stupid?

It's a house built in 1990. dot and dab. The cable looks like it's the original cable from when the house was built. It's just a case of renewing the existing cable along the same route, with some decent quality cable. I'll have to investigate more, and try testing the signal connected...

Pulling new coaxial through with old cable stupid?

Is it always a bad idea to pull the new coaxial cable through by attaching to the end of the old one and pulling? It's a plasterboard house, with the coaxial starting from loft down to lounge. I don't really want to hack through the plasterboard, but I'd rather this than run cable outside...

Advice on a very dodgy double glazing fit

6 months to a year seems to be all the time new windows last without drafts with all these dodgy fitters out there... I ended up taking off all the trim between the walls and frame together with the slicon, then redoing it myself. There were some big gaps between the plaster and frame which...

Moving digital aerial from loft to roof - what to ask them

Makes sense, as long as they don't whack a 50-100% markup on them :) Not all tradesmen are as honest as you get on here. So it's nice to know what you're talking about first. What I don't know is whether mastheads are always better or whether a loft amplifier is better where its only...

Moving digital aerial from loft to roof - what to ask them

Currently we have freeview via a 48 band high gain aerial in the loft. We get most channels despite having that thin foil backed insulation on the inside of the roof, but not the multiplex with Dave, Sky Sports News etc. I want to get a company in to install it on the roof, as I don't want to...

british jobs for British workers ?

And also live in dreadful conditions in order to accept the low wages, such as the overcrowded houses with 15 to 20 people in a semi we have locally.

Are the bin men angry because of the snow?

They were supposed to collect our black bin general waste collection on Friday. The council came out and said it would be collected on the next routine date meaning a wait of 4 weeks for rubbish to be collected :!: After loads of people complained, they've seen sense and backed down.

"don't travel unless your journey is essential"

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire reporting was nobbled :x On Thursday I was amazed that they were actually saying not to go to work! This is the first time I have ever known this. I think the presenter got taken into a room and given a severe telling off. On the Friday there was no such message...

New garden fence - which type?

£15 seems expensive. I paid £10 post, £7 gravel board and £3.50 Postcrete from builders merchants, including VAT. (Didn't bother painting them).

"don't travel unless your journey is essential"

It's the usual advice of "not to travel unless your journey is absolutely essential". What does this mean? The local travel news never actually tell you if its safe to drive to work or not. Do you count going to work as an essential journey when they say this?

    spring flowers

Bulbs are the easiest way to get early colour in spring, but I'm not sure about planting them now. I'd buy a 50-100 bulbs or more. You can buy bulbs in spring from the garden centre that are aready sprouting, but this will be a lot higher cost per bulb than buying a big bag of value bulbs...

    gravel for garden

Local builders merchants was much cheaper than those here. (Andrews in Peterborough) Don't forget the wet colour won't be the same as the colour when its dry though

    cats and their do doos

I simply don't think this is true. We're not talking about feral "mouser" cats on farms who don't get much other food. These cats are overfed with cat food. Plus cat interbreeding for asthetic reasons is interfering with this. While a cat will take young/ill rats, I doubt whether they'd...

    Flu

They said on BBC breakfast the other week that: If you've just had a cold/flu than you are weaker and more susceptible to getting a different strain of cold/flu. So once you've had one cold you can enter a vicious cycle, especially if you go places where there are lots of people.

    Learning Guitar

You might consider a beginners guitar DVD. It'll be helpful for a novice. You won't use it again after a few months so I wouldn't spend too much though.

    Freshly dug vedge plot.

Normally heat and weed growth. Maybe plastic is easier than using a more natural mulch. If you've any branches from pruning I'd cover the area with them or you'll end up with one giant cat toilet. When I dig compost into my vegetable patch I have to cover every little part. Whether cats...
