    Stained woodwork

We live in a house that has a large quantity of dark stained wood, think mahogany type colour. This includes built-in storage cupboards, panelling, skirting, internal downstairs doors etc etc. I don't mind it as it is and would certainly not want to rip it all out (the prvious owner spent £34k...

How common is it for CH to leak into immersion tank?

Do you have pipes buried in a concrete floor downstairs? We had a similar problem to yours, the possible cause of the leak came down to a leak into the immersion heater or a leak in the floor. There was no visible sign of a leak, just loss of pressure in the sealed system. Our plumber...

    Misted double Glazed Units

    1. Yes 2. Clips are on the outside - is this secure?

    Misted double Glazed Units

If by beads you mean the rubber "seal" then they are on the inside i.e the seal that looks like it might come out relatively easily (lifting in a couple of corners).

    Misted double Glazed Units

I have three double glazed units that have started to mist up inside the unit. There are a number of companies locally (Reading area) who can either supply and fit or supply only the replacement units rather than replace the whole window. My question is, what's involved in removing the old...

    Wet cold water tank!

My cold water tank in the loft is very wet on the outside at the bottom, ie the platform on which it sits is wet. I thought there may be a leak, but a week ago I removed the insulation from around the outside of the tank dried everything up and on checking last night noticed that all joints to...

    Central Heating Boiler Losing Pressure

We had a similar scenario to yours just over a year ago. We initially had a leak which was traced to a broken pipe in the concrete floor. This was dug up and repaired (easy to find due to damaged/water stained maple flooring). After about 6 months the system started to lose pressure again. I...

    Unvented Hot Water Cylinders

Hi Chris, yes I understand that. My question is do I replace the existing old and noisy pumps (not sure if new ones would be much quieter) or remove the pumps and replace with an unvented system. Thanks Steve

    Unvented Hot Water Cylinders

Not sure if I'm using the correct terminology but here goes. I currently have an indirect vented hot water cylinder (i.e. water heated from boiler with coil in cylinder, the indirect bit?). I also have 1 bathroom shower fed by an old and noisy pump to give a decent shower and a further 2...

    Painting Lining Paper

Having stripped the old wall paper off the walls I was left with lots of bare patches of plaster where the paint also came off with the wallpaper/scraper. I've made good the walls by filling and/or sanding these areas and I now want to paint the walls. My gut feeling is that in order to get a...

    pressure loss on sealed system

We checked everything but were losing all pressure in the system (1 bar -> 0 bar ) in an 8 hour period so we would have seen anything at the boiler or outside.

    pressure loss on sealed system

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but; we have just gone through a similar scenario. Leak in pipes buried in concrete on ground floor (been there about 30 years), fixed but 6 months later another leak somewhere else. Only thing to do is bite the bullet and re-pipe. I've had mine done in...

    Gloss paint

After the thread regarding wall papering in the cold, I was wondering if it's OK to apply gloss paint to skirtings etc when the temperature is low. We currently have no heating in the house (long story but being fixed now) and I want to do some painting but not if problems are likely to occur...

    Class 1 stainless liner

Thanks to info from bikerm4 and ash1 I managed to get the supplier of our stove to reduce their overall costs by nearly £500 after "educating" them regarding a reasonable price for stainless steel liners. I also got them to reduce the price of the stove by £150. So a great result all round :D
