Info on 1930s living room concrete hearth removal

I'm going to make a start digging out the concrete tomorrow but I suspect the damp is from the rubble below as all around the hole in the chimney is all dry. The moisture in the rubble is probably rising from ground level or maybe some comes through the wall below the damp course layer.

Info on 1930s living room concrete hearth removal

Hello there, I am now working in the rear room of a 1930s house I have purchased and on lifting the laminate floor (replacing with carpet), I have found an old(ish) concrete hearth that was moist/damp to the touch. Obviously I'm concerned about the damp but on inspection the fireplace floor was...

Thoughts on latest wireless security cams ?

No me and a few work colleges would just be having a game of hop scotch with them. Luckily I have a slightly more open view of how events turn out than you, and don't assume your in the 00.01% of the population because you obviously aren't ;)

Thoughts on latest wireless security cams ?

Thoughts on latest wireless security cams ?

Hello, my road seems to be going through a bit of a crime spell a the moment so I am considering security options. One things I would really like is a wireless security cam system, possibly with a speaker I could talk out of if I spot some scum trying to get in. There are so many systems around...

Secure lock for 35mm internal oak door

Hi I have a xljoinery internal oak door fitted in my garage between it and an side extension. Ideally I would like to have a 5 level sash lock in the door for an extra bit of security but I'm really not sure it one would fit. A typical 5 level lock requires a hole of 16-15mm width and a face...

Another 1930's no felt roof question

Hi MikeyB, It's stood up really well. I actually went up there earlier, first time in a month or so to see what damage the wind had done and there was no dust and only one small bit or mortar has fallen off since doing the work plus the odd tiny bit here and there. There was certainly a hell of...

Fireplace concrete base and cold bridging ?

Thanks for the info Vinn. Yes the smoke test has taken place already but sweeping hasn't been mentioned so I will ask about this. The quote isn't specific about details so I will need to confirm what they will do. I suspect issues with damp will not be part of the job. What type of...

Fireplace concrete base and cold bridging ?

I assume you mean a previous posting about a fireplace and gas pipe. That is the chimney in the rear lounge which I have now decided to block off, as the room has a large radiator. The front lounge chimney is the one with the damp issue. As a matter of interest why is the other fireplace not...

Fireplace concrete base and cold bridging ?

Yes I bought the house 6 months ago so don't know the history of work. You might be right about the work for the flooring, I suspect it is 7 or 8 years old. I was planning on ripping it up this year with a plan for carpet to be installed. I could take the skirting off, not sure about the...

Fireplace concrete base and cold bridging ?

Here are some pics, you can see the staining around the edge of the concrete. If I take the covering away from the fireplace hole the bricks are dry, and looking down the hatch to the gas pipe the ground below (2ft down) looks dry, well as dry as could be expected. The small white box is a...

Fireplace concrete base and cold bridging ?

I'm not sure , I suspect on the joists as the ground is at least 2ft further down. I'll try and get a picture and post it on here. Could I expect the people fitting the fireplace to replace the concrete, I think they thought there wasn't an existing base. Thanks for the reply :)

Fireplace concrete base and cold bridging ?

Hi, I've got a 1930 house with solid walls. At the moment the chimney breast has a hole where a fireplace should be. Last week I ordered a new gas fire and a stone surround and was told prior to installation the fitters would require me to lift up some of the laminate around the chimney breast...

Cold 3rd bedroom with sloped ceiling

Thanks for the replies :) I think the internal insulation is my best bet, however the corner of the door in to the box cupboard area is so close to the slope I'd have to consider this. Would I need to consider cold bridging when using the internal insulation. I'd need to screw it to the...

Cold 3rd bedroom with sloped ceiling

The 3rd room in my house is very cold and turning the radiator on in that room has little impact. The room is basically a box room and the roof sloped down over it meaning there is a slope in the ceiling. There is a small door in the room leading to a small stand up space again with a sloped...

    Very damp in the loft..

I had something similar in the house I recently bought (1930s). After heavy rain i noticed a bit of damn and bubbling on the bedroom ceiling. I went in the loft and noticed the wooden board near the top of chimney brickwork looked a little damn and the brickwork was a touch damn. I was getting a...

Unfelted Roof Space Blanket Insulation getting damp on top and sides

Yes and I spent a good hour or so going through as many as I could find before I posted. Nearly all were about issues with no gaps around the flooring, or people who had put coverings between the roofing rafters ........ My issue is I have floored out and insulated as seems to be recommended in...

Unfelted Roof Space Blanket Insulation getting damp on top and sides

Hi I have recently boarded out the floor of my roof which is in a 1930's house with no felt lining. Under the boarding I laid 100mm of insulation and ran the boarding up to about 10-20cm away from the roof. Initially I left the loft like that and all was fine. Recently I added 270mm of Green...
