    'COOKERS ARE NOTORIOUSLY LEAKY'

i would agree it shouldnt be on an RCD shared with other things (as leakage adds up, and the oven turning off other appliances is a pain). but having it on its own RCBO i cant see as been a bad thing, although you may not be able to justify the cost for a piece of fixed equipment.

    Energy Saving Bulbs - stupidity

isnt there some building reg that discourages the use of wasting energy? -hence why such fittings are becoming commonplace (together with the fact that nobody wants large electricity bills)

never seen them done, might have to try it. edit: found it on youtube: ballon trick water (not quite) boiling in a cup note if you try it dont use an electric hob as per the video, water and electrickery dont mix.

    Power socket flashes

if you have a high current appliance running when you switch it off it isnt that abnormal, its just worsened by cheap/old switches. what is plugged in when you see the spark? -an iron? its best if you can turn the appliance off at its own switch first. irons dont have switched as such but if its...

    Wiring for New Kitchen

i will repeat that for the benifit of the OP: -this is reasonably important as electrics now come under part p of the building regs so electricians have to be registered to do work on kitchens etc or you have to notify and pay the council before starting. theres more information in the wiki.

    External power

Another thing to consider is: what is the maximum current of the RCD you have? You may find that adding another 5kw load to a (potentially) already heavily loaded RCD may take it over its maximum. And unfortunately when you cook an RCD though over current they don’t trip.

    Photovoltaic Supply

do you intend to take the solar stuff with you when you move house? because if you do its not worth even thinking about paying to notify it.

    Notification Enquiries

my understanding is there are "two routes, a registered person, or "DIY". you would be deemed to be "DIY"". you are clearly more competent than most DIY (and many registered), building control are generally helpful on other regs, but many seam to get stuck on part p. it looks like yours is over...

    asbestos boiler flue

i take it you mean on a commercial basis. as (some (so phone before you start)) local tips take it, Im sure DIY is fine, but as always you are liable for the safety of yourself and those around (the risks and precautions have been outlined above). i hear wallpaper paste is a good way of...

do low voltage halogens trip MCBs (/RCBOs) when they blow?

oops, yes i meant Extra Low Voltage (well Safe Extra Low Voltage if we are been picky), I wasn’t concerned about needing a C curve for power up as, like you say, electronic transformers will be used not big toroidal’s, it was more to avoid the bulb blowing tripping the MCB I am hoping to avoid...

New combi boiler in loft - Is this notifyable ?

I did that because from what I have seen over of in the 'Plumbing and Central Heating' forum (where I don’t go as often) the regulars seam to class a plumber as someone who puts pipes together. They (seam to) say your better with a ‘heating engineer’ when it comes to boilers, as then the...

New combi boiler in loft - Is this notifyable ?

As far as I know fitting boilers comes under other building regs so its notifiable for them! I assume you ‘plumber’ is corgi registered, if so I think they handle the paperwork. As the boiler isn’t in kitchen, bathroom, special location etc the electrical side isn’t notifiable from what I can see.

    Messy Install...

I don’t think its been publicised widely enough, for eg I was reading electrical literature put out by focus over the weekend that didn’t even mention it, somebody quoted a survey a while back it was either 80-90% of people didn’t know what it was. Having said that yes it is more known that many...

do low voltage halogens trip MCBs (/RCBOs) when they blow?

do low voltage halogens trip MCBs (/RCBOs) when they blow? my old man is having the bathroom light changed and it specifies that the circuit must be RCD protected, as everything is in bits the best thing to do seams to be putting the bathroom on its own radial and have that sat on an RCBO...
