    Paint Stripping woes

Cheers for the reply Zampa  There wasn't much goo as I managed to get the worst off, it seems to be that it's got into all those nooks and crannies around mitres etc. It was the original door architrave that I'd transplanted from my kitchen to the hallway as only that one had been...

    Paint Stripping woes

 Calling all cars!! (Especially Super Zampa!) I've gone and made a right balls up of stripping some woodwork by not cleaning down thouroughly (long night of work, dragged myself of to bed a bit to soon! ). What can I do to make sure the paint I put on actually sticks and doesn't...

RCD trips when switching lights off

I'm no expert like the guys who have posted already, so always thinking of simple solutions I can understand so forgive me if this is I naive stupid newby thought. :? Could it be possible that whoever put the existing rings in (Assuming you just changed the CU and not the wiring) took a...

    which floor sander?

Hi Michaela, just one point to mention if you haven't done your floor yet. If you do hire the edge sander which is well worth it, (I've done one room with one and the other with my own sander which took ten times longer) be very careful when sanding near your radiator pipes. One quick pass with...

knocking in brads/ nails in t&g floor boards

I've done a couple of the rooms in our house this month and had the same problems getting the nails beneath the surface. My punches just sank into the heads of the cut nails leaving them looking like a right dogs dinner, without getting them any further beneath the surface! I just went ahead...

    Porcelain Floor Tiles

Hi, I laid porcelain floor tiles last month in my new bathroom. Used BAL rapidset flexible adhesive, it's got some new fangled porcel bond plus stuff in it for porcelain & other fully vitrified tiles. Really pleased with the result. I used same stuff on the wall tiles which are 330 x 600mm...

Slowest pinhole leak in the world

Hi there, I had a very similar problem in my house. I uncovered an oval shaped damp patch (mine ran horizontally) in one of the bedrooms upstairs. Thought it was from moisture getting accross the cavity wall on wall ties covered with mortar. Turned out it was where there had been a bed, and...

    Red or Brown....

So.....with the new harmonised colours coming in does that mean we should be starting to mark say, switched lives with brown sparks tape or stick with the red? :? Just a point that came up in the office as we while away this sunny afternoon...

    mains downlighters

Loads of stuff on this site about no. of lights on circuit. P=IV Lighting circuit I = 5A V = 240v So max P would be 5 x 240 = 1200watts All you're putting on one circuit is 5 spots @ 50w a piece, plus two 60w pendants, which is only 370w in total. I'm no pro electrician but it...

What on earth is this!....well what on neutral anyway!

Eventually traced this problem back to a loose connection with my multimeter, seems I had the wiring right from the beginning, feel a bit of a dumbass but who cares -- lights work so I can get back to my tiling now! Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate the time you took...

What on earth is this!....well what on neutral anyway!

Yup, that's what I did, but had no joy :? after I'd switched the lives I put the power back on, tried the switch, no light. You're dead right though B-A-S, I went through everything you've mentioned pretty much last night, that's when I decided I'd gone past my point of knowledge and...

What on earth is this!....well what on neutral anyway!

Cheers mike, I did notice that on the back of the switch there was an 'N' marked in pencil near to one of the L1 terminals, maybe it is a switched neutral... I think I'll be ok as long as I keep all the power to the lighting circuits off, just in case the 'borrowed' cable is keeping power in...

What on earth is this!....well what on neutral anyway!

:( Sorry for the essay! Thought I had it all figured out with this lighting malarky, till I encountered this little fellow lurking amongst the rafters.. Basically there's a double switch on my door frame, left hand switches one light, right hand did switch another until it was...

Laying the bones for my extractor fan

Jeeeez...wonder if that was invented by one of those yanks out there claiming they've been beemed up by little green men, obviously where his inspiration came from.... That all in one plate with key isolator looks canny, it would be nice to keep it all together - hadn't realised there were...

Laying the bones for my extractor fan

Aye, the rose will be fed from the bathroom light rose, so will be completely independent as you say. I thought originally that I'd use the isolator as the main switch but then realised the timer overrun function wouldn't work then as it would cut the live feed. Unless there's some other way...

Laying the bones for my extractor fan

Hi again, I've got my selv fan for my bathroom and am running the cables needed before the bathroom gets plastered and tiled up. I'll be getting a spark to do the connections as there's a couple of other jobs need doing anyway, never mind the part P :o( I just want to check that what I put in...

Lath and plaster ceiling / new light fittings

Right, just put mine in as plasterer comes in the morning so had to bite the bullet. The whole supporting the laths with board went out the window, couldn't be pestered with it! I just got a new holesaw blade and drilled straight through the laths, worked fine! I wouldn't have got away with...
