Pitched roof, fibre cement slate - is this acceptable work quality?

So, I have undertaken a ground floor extension. The roof consists of two parts - a flat deck and pitched sides left and right, at about 23 degrees or so, nothing overly complex. I chose Marley Eternit Thrutone fibre cement slate. I also bought copper rivets, 65mm galvanised wire nails for...

Second opinion: are my roofers doing a good job?

I'm having an overhaul of my ground floor flat. The builders I am using came via recommendation, although despite this they have done one or two things, which I haven't been happy with (fixed however once I pointed out, but had I not noticed it would have been swept under carpet). Anyway. Back...

Correct nail size for battens + counterbattens

Thanks for the comments folks. I just popped into a branch of a trade DIY chain, and was told that I should use stainless steel screws instead of aluminium nails for battens? Now I'm really confused. I didn't buy anything, came back on here to check what's going on :D

Correct nail size for battens + counterbattens

Hello folks! :D I need to buy some nails to fix down: (a) Vertical counterbattens (25mm x 50mm) (b) Horizontal battens (25mm x 50mm) (c) Fibre cement tiles (60cm x 30cm) My thoughts are as follows (please can somebody correct me if I am wrong?) (a) Vertical counterbattens will be used to pin...

    Natural slate at 18 degrees?

I thought I would start a new thread as I was going off-topic on the other thread (originally it was about battens / counterbattens). The side roof pitches are 18 degrees, which I appreciate is quite shallow. In the opinion of experienced members on here, would I get away with using natural...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

Would you advise I use something other than slate? What if I was to lap the slate more than necessary would that be ok?

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

I'm being a bit thick, but do you mean I should cover my side pitches with a sarking board (I have plenty of OSB3 T&G board 18mm on site), leaving a gap of about 5mm between each board and then counterbatten + batten on top of that? Or do you mean something else? Pitch is about 18 to 20, as per...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

Woody, further to your post, I panicked and went to measure up. :D To be double sure, I also installed an angle app on my mobile, put it on a spirit level to ensure it was calibrated and got 18 degrees on one beam and then 20 on the other, which I think makes sense as I measured about 4.5"...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

Ok, now I'm panicking...I'm gonna go measure and report back. I hope it isn't as the Velux I will be putting in are only warranted to 15 degrees, anything below that and there is no guarantee they will not leak. Yikes! :(

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

Ok, counterbatten and batten it is then. 25mm x 50mm ok? It costs me same as the smaller stuff unless you tell me I specifically need the smaller stuff. Aiming to use natural slate, 8mm or so thick. Pitch is something like 15 to 18 degrees. I will check and report back! Any view on whether I...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

Morning all, thanks for the replies. Couple of follow up q's: 1. My initial plan re: counterbatten + batten, is it simply plain wrong and could cause issues, or is it just overkill? I don't mind it being the latter as I often tend to overspec most things just to be on the safe side. I'm also...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

There is a good explanation here, which simpletons like me could understand quite well: :D http://blog.kingspaninsulation.co.uk/why-are-counter-battens-used-in-pitched-roofs/ Summary of it is: "Roof tiles are usually laid horizontally, attached to timber tiling battens.. Underneath these...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

I'm no expert, but there was a thread I read (might even been on here), that stated the benefits of a vertical counterbatten are: 1. Increased airflow as they lift up the tiles slightly 2. It helps with water dissipation as water can simply run down under the main battens 3. Whenever I have...

Couple of simple q's about counterbattens, battens and nails

Hello helpful folks :D I'm looking into redoing my roof, here is how things stand at the minute (everyone likes a picture don't they!) 1. John Brash make proper treated red colour battens. I plan to use 25mm x 50mm for vertical counterbattens and same again for horizontal battens as I will be...

Can I sand / cement render then plaster in bathroom area?

I'm having a bit of a mental block with this one. I have just built a small side extension, which will house a shower, bath and basin. Quite simple. The build is the usual, outer course brick, 100mm cavity wall full-fill insulation, then inner leaf is block. What I am having trouble with is...

    Roof battens and counter battens

Hi Woody, thanks for your input. In terms of rafters, they will be 200mm in size, I'm going for in between the rafter insulation only, and sealing it all up from underneath using Tyvek AirGuard, just before the ceiling plasterboard is fixed on. So in terms of layers, it will be: 1. Slate 2...

    Roof battens and counter battens

Ok, so I only need 2 x layers of battens if I am insulating over the rafters, otherwise just the 1 x layer is fine?

Very logical, thank you for the explanation. Honeywell is quite pricey, are there any other wireless thermostats you can recommend for me to go away and research?
