Patching A Small Area - Which Plaster?

We have bricked up an old air vent (200mm x 150mm) in a bedroom and now need to plaster this area to match the rest of the wall. (There used to be a boiler in the bedroom many years ago, so the vent doesn't serve much of a purpose these days other than creating a draft.) What's the best way...

Single Brick Wall - How To Upgrade To Meet Existing Regs

That diagram shows an external wall made out of blockwork if I'm not mistaken. How would a single brickwork wall be upgraded to current standards?

No Certificate For New Electrics And Local Authority Demands

SimonH2, to answer your question, the electrical work was done before the building work was complete and a final visit from a BCO. However, we have not received any 'completion' certificates for the entire conversion as the LABC are firstly wanting the electrical certificate.

No Certificate For New Electrics And Local Authority Demands

We completed a garage conversion which involved Building Control. As part of the conversion, 3 new sockets were installed into the existing ring main and new spotlights daisy chained from the existing lighting circuit. An NICEIC-registered electrician undertook the work, invoiced for it, and...

Single Brick Wall - How To Upgrade To Meet Existing Regs

We have a room at the side of our house which we use fairly often. We would now like to extend this room which will involve Building Control. The room is already an extension onto the existing house and is built merely from a single-skin brickwork wall with panelling on the inside. No idea...

Installing A Marble Fireplace - Brackets vs Adhesive

What 'sticky stuff' did you use? Grip fill or a 'no more nails' type of adhesive? Also, this fireplace has a rebate of 80mm, meaning that the back panel will need to be fixed some 60mm from the rear wall. Can I simply pad this gap out with 5 or so layers of standard plasterboard, each one...

Installing A Marble Fireplace - Brackets vs Adhesive

How did you fix the brackets to the fireplace surround? Was it also marble?

Installing A Marble Fireplace - Brackets vs Adhesive

I want to install a new marble fireplace (surround, back panel and hearth) to replace our old fireplace. The gas connection will be done by a Gas Safe engineer. The old surround has been ripped out and the wall has just been plastered (hardwall and multifinish). a) What is the most common way...

Connecting waste pipes onto soil pipes (top or side feed?)

Apologies for interrupting the thread but what is the reason for the 'no connections below 450mm rule'?

Old 'Brown' Rubber Pipe Burst - How To Repair?

This is precisely what I came back to ask, good observations :)! The rubbing seems to have taken place at the point where two sheets of plasterboard meet. The gap in-between them was in-filled with some form of drywall joint adhesive which came through into the ceiling void and created a...

Old 'Brown' Rubber Pipe Burst - How To Repair?

Thanks for the reply, pushift fits perfectly, however is this a permanent solution? Speedfit (grey or white) inserts won't go in, however metal Polyplumb one's do, together with a Speedfit straight connector. Would this be a reliably combination (I can't remember the last time I used Polyplumb...

Old 'Brown' Rubber Pipe Burst - How To Repair?

Thanks for the prompt reply :). I have a load of JG Speedfit lying around together with their barrier pipe inserts. Will these be suitable, or do I need HEP fittings themselves?

Old 'Brown' Rubber Pipe Burst - How To Repair?

We have found one brown coloured pipe made out of rubber which in essence look like a thick rubber hose at circa 15mm (although it is likely to be imperial) carrying hot water to a bathroom on the other side of the house. I would guess the pipe was installed some 20 years+ ago and is possibly a...

Flashing Under Ridge Where Three Hips Meet?

I take it you mean by placing the lead ontop of the hip/ridge shingles? If that is what you mean, I would rather keep any flashing hidden away if feasible.

Flashing Under Ridge Where Three Hips Meet?

Thanks for the heads up, I take it that the cedar would react with the lead otherwise? Should I stick the lead down with the wet bitumen? Or let the bitumen dry on the lead before laying the lead onto the ridge? I will obviously be hammering nails through the lead to fix the hip tiles...

Flashing Under Ridge Where Three Hips Meet?

I have built a cedar shingle roof and have three hips which meet at one point (see sketch). I will be installing hip/ridge shingles along all three junctions, but am unsure how to seal the point (ridge) where they all meet. Ideally I would like to mitre the three ridge tiles together where...

Batten Spacing On Roof With Two Pitches

The hips will not be mitred as I'm not using any underlay of flashing underneath the shingles. The hips will have cedar ridge shingles (basically two shingles stapled together at an angle) along them.
