    Rayburn 400kpf

If it uses the aga rayburn electronic circuit board, this will contain an airflow sensor that extends from the board into the power flue. When the burner starts up the circuit board tests for correct air flow and if it doesnt see it, it shuts the burner back down for safety reasons. This part of...

    Laminate on kitchens?

a mate of mine did his kitchen in laminate when it was all the rage. After a leak in his washing machine the whole floor ended up worthless, de-laminated and warped. Must've been lounge grade!

Pyronix Sterling 10 - Keypad Replacement

I have an earlier version of the sterling (paragon) and my keys got worn a few years ago. I dismantled the keypad and used some conductive rubber paint to re-surface the keyboard contacts. This can be bought online and is often sold for refurbishing tv remote control contacts. Saves the hassle...

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

My uncle showed me the boss white trick on old pipes, he's an old school plumber. I've never had leaks with boss white but I've had a few compression fittings weep when used dry. I know how compression fittings work. A bit of something on the threads stops them squeaking when you nip them up. I...

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

Did the job this weekend. Used plumbcenter center-rad radiators which are a rebranded Myson Rettig. Used Pegler valves. I gave the copper tails a blast with the blowtorch to get rid of the paint and slacken the old olives off. I cleaned the tails with wire wool and checked they were not dented...

    Smoking fireplace

Why's it junk? It looks really well made. This issue hasn't been resolved yet! The fitters are the main Woodwarm dealer for the county and the receipt has the hetas logo.

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

No I'm not going to dig up the floor. I have a very expensive fitted carpet and marley tiles under that. The floors are concrete. If the pipe ends up coming through the carpet in a different place there will be a hole where the old pipe came out. My question wasn't about the various ways of...

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

I did think about a couple of those but the rads are so close to the floor that I dont think I'd get them in unless I cut the pipe so close to the floor that I'd risk burning the carpet when soldering.

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

?? No plastic on my radiators. I don't think there's room to get elbows on the pipe stubs coming out of the floor, as the radiators are only about 40mm short each side. I could mount the radiator to one side and just use one dog-legged pipe but I think this would look a bodge. At least the...

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

Not sure if that's an endorsement? Extensions like this are great when you're going from an imperial to metric radiator as I am; in this case from a 50 inch to a 1200m. The pipes are set into the concrete floor so moving them in or out by an inch or two would mean pulling up the fitted carpets...

Rad valve extensions (fixed type) Sealing?

I've fitted a few of these as I've progressively replaced radiators in my house. So far I've used PTFE tape into the radiator and then PTFE from the valve into the extension. Although the valve tail is a taper thread, the one on the radiator end of the extention appears parallel, and I've had...

Castle Euro Mini;Problems adding an additional RKP

I'm having problems adding a second keypad to a castle euro mini. I've never done it before though I've installed several euros and the similar pyronix PCX systems without trouble. I installed the original system a few years ago without a problem using one RKP. Now I need to add another. I...

New boiler or service of old one?

Well, I'm not a luddite, not with my job! I just don't want the old boiler to go for scrap if its replacement ends up as a costly, inconvenient white elephant. But advice on this subject seems to be 50:50 either way. I dont want to be like one of those people who takes out perfectly good light...

New boiler or service of old one?

Mmm. Money's not particularly a problem. If a modern electronic boiler fails over some christmas I can imagine a cold wait for a new and expensive board or motorised valve gadget to appear when the wholesaler opens in January! The last time my Ideal broke was over christmas as it happens..and...

New boiler or service of old one?

my regular gas guy installs baxi (just done one for a mate). Are they a good bet ? A few years ago another mate had nothing but trouble with his, something to do with flow switches. As an engineer I like to see stuff made to last!

New boiler or service of old one?

My boiler is late 70's floorstander, an Ideal E-CF60. It works fine but it's time for its service. Everyone I've spoken to (outside the trade) is horrified that a gas boiler this old is still in use and tells me to get it changed. However my father has a boiler from around 1972 that is...

    Waffle-back Bathroom Carpet

I've just ripped up my foam rubber waffle-backed bathroom carpet and am looking for some more. I picked the colour from the local shop, got measured and quoted, and ordered it only to be told a week later that the supplier had gone out of business. I've since spoken to another supplier who...
