    Leaking Pan Connectors

I have had 2 occasions in as many weeks where brand new pan connectors on brand new pans have refused to stop weeping. Both pans were from Graham's (one a Sandringham, the other I can't remember). The first connector was a McAlpine 90 bossed; I eventually solved it ordering-in a multiquik 90...

Who pays, installer or household insurance?

I once had a speedfit endcap pop-off a mains cold pipe after 2 weeks. It had been put on properly but you could see from the grip marks where the cap had slowly worked it way off. My boss at the time put it down to a sudden surge in mains pressure. Luckily it was on a building site and did v...

Fixing a toilet to the floor

Forget cementing it down! For these types of pan use specific fixings kits (some made by Fischer) They consist of 2 L-shaped plastic fittings that are fixed to the floor with coach bolts and then you fix through the holes in the pan to these fixings. Sorry, hard to explain but go to any...

    Roof Rack Pipe

Hi I'm going to fix a blk soil pipe to my roof rack, with screwed access & cap to hold my pipes. Can anyone tell me if the clips people normally use are standard 110mm pipe clips?? I find it hard to believe that these can stop the pipe slipping when travelling. Can anyone confirm how...

    Copper pipes vs plastic

Personally, I use both regularly as they have they're own benefits. I prefer to drill in the centre of joists and stitch plastic through, rather than notch for copper. There is a lot of snobbery about using plastic and I have subbed for one firm who would not touch it, but would happily cut...

    Fernco - underground?

Hi I have a job coming up where I will be removing all the cast iron soil stack and replacing with plastic. I will also be running an internal soil pipe underground to join the stack. In the past I have always used ferncos to join the plastic to the cast iron, but these jobs have always been...

    Tiling on wooden bathroom floor

WBP is mainly for areas that will get a lot of water (shower area) so its not necessarily needed elsewhere, but you probably want to lay a thin sheet to give yourself an even surface to tile to.

    Satin Varnish

I have just sanded the floorboards in our lounge - now ready for varnishing. When I looked into the various satin varnishes the shop assistant recommended putting a layer of gloss on first to soak into the wood, then 2 layers of satin. Is this good advice, or is he trying to sell me 2 types...

Hot is too cold in winter

If you have access to the pipework you could put a ballafix on the cold and reduce the flow with that

    Worcester Digistat Optimiser

Hi I've just received a Worcester Digistat Optimiser for my Greenstar 30Si combi on recommendation in the Worcester brochure and website. What I don't understand is that the receiver has DHW timer settings. As this is a combi boiler with only on-demand hot water - it has confused me!! Any...

Selling 2nd Hand gas appliances - regs?

Hi Are there any rules/regs/laws on selling 2nd hand gas appliances?? I'm putting in CH into my new house and taking out fairly new Main Medway multi-point heater & 3x Baxi Brazilia gas wall heaters. Is it legal to sell them? - they're in pretty good nick. Cheers, Graham

CH work - not Corgi - how far can I go!!!

Thanks for the feedback although the topic has strayed somewhat. I'd like to think that my initial concern was a long way from deliberately and illegally installing a gas appliance. Cheers, Graham

CH work - not Corgi - how far can I go!!!

Hi I'm a qualified plumber, but not a qualified gas engineer. I always believed that I was OK to work on radiators etc. on the central heating circuit. However, I have had a recent incidence where after draining down and moving some pipework, I discovered that the filling loop was faulty...
