    suspended cable to Detached garage

20+ years ago my late father ran some twin and earth from the house to the detached garage, the distance being about 2m. He tied the cable to a tensioned wire which was bolted at each end to brickwork. I have just had the Electrics tested for a Landlords Certificate and he said not only has the...

Which roller to emulsion over Artex

I'm doing a quick refresh of a house before letting it out. It has Artex ceilings and embossed wallpaper so I'm just going to go over the lot with white matt emulsion on walls and ceiling. Which type of 9" roller should I use, preferably from either Screwfix or Toolstation ? thanks

Block Driveway - Aggregate / Grit sand

This is a question for the professional driveway guys. I've had the driveway dug out and stoned up but he dug a bit too much out so I need to put more on it to get to the finished level. I can either top the crusherun with a) more Crush and then 30mm grit sand or b) just use a thicker layer of...

    Fitting new gas meter box

My mum has oil central heating in her bungalow but we have recently arranged for a new gas supply to be run to the house from the street in readiness for replacing the old boiler with a gas Combi CH boiler. I wasn't there when Cadent visited the house but they suggested if I could fit the new...

Swapping Old Fuse Box for New CU

So if the electrician pulls the main fuse to swap out the CU and replaces it, is there going to be an issue with the power company / supplier ? Someone going to turn up or call wanting to know what's going on ?

Swapping Old Fuse Box for New CU

Thanks guys. I just did a Google and apparently Smart Meters have a tamper proof switch inside so unless an electrician knows how to deal with those after cutting the security wire, I'm thinking if there is no requirement to upgrade to 25mm tails, ask him if he's going to use the old ones. It's...

Swapping Old Fuse Box for New CU

So only the Power Company can re-instate the security seal ? Do self employed electricians just cut the seal and leave it off after completion ? Thanks for the Qualification explanation .. seems like you pays your money and takes your chance !

Swapping Old Fuse Box for New CU

My Mums 1980's bungalow has an old 4 way Fuse box so it's about time it was swapped out for a new Consumer Unit. I've had a look around and there is no earth from the Fuse box to the water pipes or the oil feed pipe for the Oil Central heating so those would need earth straps too. She had a...

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

Yes it probably needs that as well but as I had it installed 10+ years ago and we're in a hard water area, it only takes an hour or so to remove and descale the heat exchanger, I'll give that a go after Xmas and then do the measurements and balance the flow rate. cheers guys

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

I've got hot water now so no rush for descaling it this close to Xmas. I'll get some Salts and give it a good soak in January. thanks for your advice & have a good one !

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

Yeah I was thinking that is all it should need. How would you advise to descale the exchanger ? I was thinking I could remove it and soak in Spirits of Salt (a strong Hydrochloric Acid) for an hour or so with gloves and lots of ventilation for PPE purposes. Or can you do it economically while...

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

Yeah, I think you're right. I've replaced the Diverter valve and that has stopped the Flow getting hot when drawing DHW. The LED's are still at 60 max on DHW but I'll see how hot the shower is when the CH is on and if it isn't hot enough I'll replace the heat exchanger next. Is it worth...

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

I've bought a new Diverter valve instead of the kit and to avoid draining the complete house CH system I can shut off the Flow (A), Return (E) and Cold (D) with the valves under the the boiler and drain the DHW by running the hot tap (B) But I can't see any tap to drain the water that will...

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

Hi, thanks, I just tried it again with the minimal DHW flow and it still stayed at 60. But then I noticed something strange. The CH Flow pipe leaving the boiler was just as hot as the DHW pipe and stayed as hot until I switched the DHW tap off. And the CH hasn't been on for hours. When the DHW...

    Ariston 27 mffi DHW

Hi, I have an Ariston 27 MFFI combi boiler, with only DHW running when I turn the Hot tap full on and the DHW Temp dial set at Max the temperature LED's on the boiler go up to 60 and no further. Is that correct as I have seen a YouTube video where the same model boiler lit up the higher LED's...

Dripping from lever on filling Loop valve

So will I need an isolating valve with 2 different threads or an adapter for one side ? thanks

Dripping from lever on filling Loop valve

The valve on the Flow side of the CH filling loop is dripping from the plastic lever. It's an Ariston boiler and this is how it was installed many years ago. The cold supply end of the chrome filling loop connects to a non return brass lever valve and it's OK. I can't find a similar brass valve...

    Green slime on stone chippings

Can anyone identify this green slime that appears to be living on the stone chippings on my drive ? The chippings have been there 20+ years and this is the first time the slime has appeared. It appears to be growing and slowly taking over all the area. I have put weedkiller on but it didn't...
