    Which lighting for dark stairwell/landing?

You don't say whether your house is modern or a period property. I have a modern townhouse and recently bought this light for a dining area: http://www.johnlewis.com/Electrical+Appliances/Lighting/Ceiling+Lighting/View+all+Ceiling+Lights/6534/230334721/Product.aspx It takes three 40 watt...

painting exterior front door - nasty finish

You might be better filling the open grain. Polycell make a 'fine surface' filler that's suitable for wood. It's pleasant stuff and you can then lightly sand it down for a nice smooth surface ready for painting.

    Painting skirtings and doors

Good to know it worked for you. I'm going to get some to cover some varnished ply doors.

How do I remove brown hair dye from white cotton?

Try bleach, dabbed on with a cotton bud and rinsed immediately the stain goes.

    Papering tomorrow.............

As I understand it. you start at one side of the window and paper into the side reveal, then carry on across, wrapping the next piece down and under the top reveal. You will end up with a bit on the underside that you will need to patch - or if you're like me, several bits. I hate doing windows.

    leaky roof

If the house is only 6 years old, is it not covered by an NHBC certificate? I'd check on that first before messing around with bits of felt.

    Painting over plaster

If the plaster is in good shape, you can fill the hairline cracks with flexible filler. As for the bumps, yes you can sand them but make sure the plaster is sound behind the bumps. If you tap it and it sounds hollow then it's lost adhesion and you might have to chip back and fill with plaster...

Want to rate your doctor or dentist

Well, there is Checkatrade - I got a great plasterer from a recommendation on that.

    I agree, John. That's why I'm publicising it :)

Want to rate your doctor or dentist

I just found this site http://ratemds.com/social/?q=node/8521 It allows you to rate your doctor or dentist. It's a U.S. site but there's a UK section - only 71 doctors/dentists listed at the moment - but if more people add to it, it could be an excellent resource. You can put in details...

    Stair make-over?

Having read the posts on putting wood flooring on stairs, I am naturally a touch apprehensive, so you can imagine my delight when I came across the following product: www.stairmakeover.com It sounds great and being anti-slip it answers my main concern. The only problem is the price. It...

    Painting skirtings and doors

I'd second that. I recently used water-based primer/undercoat (because the smell of the oil-based product gets up my nose) and I had to put about three coats on just to cover up the marks left by the knotting. An oil-based primer did it in one.

Do you need an E cloth for a new kitchen?

Thanks for the warning, rt. It sounds as though B&Q need to give some serious thought to their quality control. It's a real shame and I sympathise. I guess you could always try writing to the manager or director and let them know how you feel.

    Painting skirtings and doors

Yes, I see that. Interesting. I could understand it if you were trying to put water-based paint onto a surface previously painted with oil - because that would flake off. Also if you were radically changing the colour of your skirtings, it would make sense to apply primer/undercoat. Maybe...

Is 255 cms too tall for wardrobe doors?

Symptoms, many thanks. I really do think my life would be a lot easier with a router. I've wanted one for years but never quite got around to buying one. That website's great, too. I'd like to visit the shop but why is everything interesting in the North? :(

    Painting skirtings and doors

I think you'll find that the primer is recommended for bare wood or plaster. There should be something on the tin about 'previously painted surfaces'.

hotpoint leaving most of powder in drawer

Mmm, tricky. It's probably not a big thing to repair but it always costs. You could switch to tableted powder and place it on top of your wash at the back. These things dissolve quickly so it would do your fabrics no harm.

    So many tilers...So many contradictions.......

The grout will crack in between the tiles. The tiles could come loose and then you'll have the devil of a job fixing them back in. This happened to me three days after the tiles had been laid by a professional tiler. He came back and redid it using flexible grout but the cracks were there...
