    Fiat Brava (hydraulic) clutch

Clutch has today started to make clicking noises when depressed. I think thrust bearing is definitely shot. No time to replace clutch myself. How much should I pay for a garage to do it?

    vectra tailgate electrics

Problem solved with help of Haynes wiring diagram, which was accurate, and multimeter + a bit of educated guesswork. Electrics work and boot is dry! Anyway. If anyone has a leak into the nearside boot area of a Vectra hatch I would suggest looking at the rubber hose/gaiter on the top...

    vectra tailgate electrics

I had a leak into the boot of my Vectra hatch via the hole for the tailgate wiring. Unfortunately, in order to replace the leaky rubber hose, I had to cut off the 2 connectors to the tailgate wiring. It was only after cutting that I noticed 2 wires in one of the connectors were the same...

    Fiat Brava (hydraulic) clutch

Thanks for your reply. Since posting I have lubed the release-arm bearing on the outside of the bell-housing. This has freed the movement considerably. The clutch will need replacing at some stage though. I have never replaced a clutch myself and am in 2 minds whether to DIY, or take to...

FIAT MAREA 2.0HLX NOT STARTING - IGNITION LIGHT FLASHES

Could be dead battery. Even if the battery itself is good it will go dead if there is a problem with, for example, the charging circuit. What happens if you try to start it with jump leads?

    Fiat Brava (hydraulic) clutch

The clutch on my Brava was failing to disengage intermittently and stiff in operation. I replaced the slave cylinder which has cured the failure to disengage. The stiffness remains, however, and not in a good way. It tends to be worse if the car has not been driven for a few days, as...

    Vectra fault code

Thanks for your replies. I have inspected the air intake ducts and associated hoses, including the 2 breather hoses that I can see. All appear to be in good condition. No splits and joints appear sound. I guess the only way to check for blockages would be to have the hose off. I haven't...

help with cv boot & headlights

I have used one of those universal cv boots that you cut to size and then glue around the joint. My experience was that it was very difficult to get the 'big end' of the boot to stay in place with the ratchet tie wrap - mine 'popped off'. As neo says people do use them successfully...

Astra brake drum removal / general braking problem

'One man' bleeding kits, using air pressure from your spare tyre, are by far the easiest diy way to bleed you brakes and very effective.

Astra brake drum removal / general braking problem

I have removed lipped brake drums by bolting the road wheel back onto the drum. It gives you something bigger to get hold of! At the risk of stating the obvious the car must be properly supported if you use this method, e.g. axle stands. You don't want your wrists squished between the wheel...

    Vectra fault code

Thanks for your replies. Interesting about the throttle cable. I was getting quite excited at the prospect of a quick and painless fix. Unfortunately my car doesn't have one. According to the manual the accelerator position is sensed and passed to the ecu electronically - D'oh...

    Vectra fault code

I have a 2001 Vectra with the Z18XE engine. The engine management light has been coming on fairly regularly for some time now with no other symptoms. Following some helpful advice (thanks chaps) I have bought an Elmscan 5 scanner package, plugged in the laptop and read the fault code...

Astra rear brakes, routine replacement = rubbing + squeek

Measure the internal diameter. Then take another measurement at right angles to the first. Compare the two, they should be identical. Repeat, taking pairs of measurements around the drum. This will tell you whether or not the drum is the correct size and if there is any ovality. Only...

    Citreon AX10 valve timing

Following may/may not be helpful. If the cam and crank shafts have not moved while the belt was off then timing should be correct. Were you able to lock the cam shaft? The crank will not move on it's own. (Battery should be disconnected all the time belt is being changed) The only...

Astra rear brakes, routine replacement = rubbing + squeek

I do have a mic but is that not only going to tell me the drum wall thickness which could be uneven without affecting the truness of the machined surface inside? Sorry I should have specified, an internal micrometer. Anyway, as the drums are brand new I wouldn't think this should be an issue.

Astra rear brakes, routine replacement = rubbing + squeek

A few thoughts which may/may not be helpful: 1. I have just looked at renewing brake drums in one of my workshop manuals. It says 'use a suitable solvent to remove any preservative that may have been applied to internal friction surfaces' This could explain the squeal. Maybe the rub...

    Fault code readers

Thanks for all your posts. I have ordered the Elmscan 5 from ESP Automotive. Hope I can find out why the engine management light keeps coming on in the Vectra now :!:

    Fault code readers

I am considering getting a fault code reader, but don't know much about them. I maintain a Vauxhall Vectra and a Fiat Brava. Could I get one reader for both cars? Is OBD the standard system or are there others? Is it better to get a stand alone reader or cable and software for a laptop...
