Just checking ... immersion heater spur?

Ahem, there you go then! No, it's a new house, and I can't find (believe me I've looked) a straightforward way of getting a cable up behind the plasterboard into the loft. And by choice I'd rather not bung a run of trunking up. I can find sockets that have space behind them, but when I feed a...

    Chipped brick repair

Brick dye - where can I get that from - builders merchant? I was looking on me UniBond"No More Nails" cartridge. Reckons it will work on brick - just not "permanently damp or wet areas" - and to me 10 feet up on a south facing wall qualifies. Any thoughts?

Just checking ... immersion heater spur?

I was very surprised to read the thread that suggested that doing this was acceptable. I'd always thought of immersion heaters as dedicated circuits. As you say, there's not a lot of juice left over. But the argument "what if someone adds x, y, and z" could surely be used on any circuit ...

    Chipped brick repair

Thanks ... I'll try anythin' that sounds reasonable !! But yeah, as you say, anything like that really needs to be kept out of the weather 'til it's dry ... but it's a small area so that shouldn't be too much of a prob.

    Chipped brick repair

In drilling a hole through to the outside wall, I've managed to break off a piece of the face of the brick - full height and about 6-7 cms across. It's a very clean break, but the piece is fairly fragile (about 10-12 mm thick at most). I want to cement it back in place, but anything...

Just checking ... immersion heater spur?

Happy and Safe New Year all. I have just installed two security lights (150W each) that I have not yet connected, with cable runs into the loft. There are currently 11 light fittings and 2 extractor fans on the upstairs lighting curcuit, so if I connect the security lights to the upstairs...

    Two-way switches ... break-before-make ?

Had a feeling someone was going to say that  Not knowing how PIRs are constructed, I wasn't sure whether it was feasible to have its load "live" when the PIR wasn't "switched". Seems like the answer is YES! Ta PS Still like to know the break-before-make answer ... just out of...

    Two-way switches ... break-before-make ?

Are domestic 2-way (light) switches break-before-make? If so is it acceptable to reply upon this as a method of "disconnecting" from one terminal before connecting to the other? I'd ideally like to use one to switch the live feed to a PIR to the live feed to the light which the PIR controls...

To tee or not to tee ... bend radius

Just battled through town and managed to find one to look at in B&Q - yup, seems a fair amount of room. Looked a lot tighter in the piccie  Must admit, I'd envisaged installing it in conjunction with the conduit rather than drawing it through afterwards, but as you say that begs the...

To tee or not to tee ... bend radius

Is the bend radius on a "normal" 20mm conduit tee too tight to take two 2.5 T&E cables along each arm? The radius needs to be 31mm, but it looks very tight in the picture I have ... I'll know when they turn up on my doorstep .... but I'm sure someone here can tell me before then.

    Alarm interference

alarm_guy, it's exactly as I said ... the house has pre-installed cabling for an alarm ... but no alarm; just a pattress at the end of each alarm wire where the PIR will go. But yeah, I asked the question 'cos I'd read of the potential for alarm interference on other threads - it doesn't...

    Alarm interference

Ta. As I say, the alarm wiring is already in place - I can't alter that. So .... strike one for "not a problem" .... any advance? :)

    Alarm interference

Hi I want to extend the ring main within my (integral) garage. The best route is to run conduit just below ceiling height. However, half-way along my "wall of choice" there's a pattress at the end of an alarm cable (new house - alarm not yet installed but wiring already in place) where the...

Security lights - advice on cable run please

Okay. I must admit I was considering plastic conduit, but more out of guesswork than knowledge .... hence the question. That's helpful - thanks folks.

Security lights - advice on cable run please

Yeah ... it's the "supposed to be used" bit I'm concerned about :)

Security lights - advice on cable run please

Hi I'm about to install a couple of outdoor security lights. For one of them I'm able to access the back of the lamp going straight through the exterior wall. The other requires a cable run vertically down the outside of the house, with the run originating in the loft. I can't find any...
