    cross over pipes

Always great to find a thread with a similar question to the one you have... bit of a shame it was never properly answered though. =================== 10 year old thread. starting a new one.

    Cladding: How Is This Achieved

Keep in mind that if you go vertical, when the bottom part inevitably starts to go you have to replace the lot as opposed to just the bottom 1 or 2 pieces.

    Which Lintel to Use

I'm cutting a new doorway in an upstairs bedroom to allow direct access to the bathroom. Above the new opening, there will be 2 courses of blocks remaining. On top of that, the ceiling joists sit. They run from the left and right of the house to the middle wall (in which I'm now adding a...

What is this type of roof called?

Starting to think about what roof to go for with our extension. Unfortunately, due to the size of the extension and the position of the windows on the existing house, we can't go for a pitched roof. Now, I don't particularly like the look of a flat roof, so was thinking about doing something...

    40m2 Extension Self-Build

I'm now waiting for a structural engineer to visit. I had expected us to just be able to fit a beam in the back wall, but sounds like we'll need some sort of goal post construction instead. A little annoyed with that (but only myself to blame). Guess we'll have to live with a sandpit for a...

    40m2 Extension Self-Build

We've also managed to level out the Type 1 a little better, which makes it easier to walk around.

    40m2 Extension Self-Build

Quick update, we're now up to DPC level. That was 1 foundation block on the concrete foundations + 3 engineering bricks on the outside, and 1 concrete block on the inside.

    40m2 Extension Self-Build

Thanks @kingandy2nd I'm now on week 2 of recovery though :D Next weekend I'm starting to build up to DPC, with the concrete for the floor hopefully following the week after. Like you with your temporary first floor, I've got to think about it taking longer than normal. As I'm not doing a...

SAP Calculations - Can you DIY these?

Assuming I didn't mess that up, I think we'd be OK even without doing anything fancy and potentially too expensive. Let's see if my BCO accepts my back of fag packet calculation.

SAP Calculations - Can you DIY these?

Thanks Swils, I got all that. But still have no idea how to do these calculations. Is there a website, or an excel file or something for this?

Slow going - my double storey extension build

Thanks Andy, been following your build for a while and as I've started mine now (and saw it in your pictures) it felt like a good time to ask. Will take the advice and go for a full fill. Probably 100mm Knauf Earthwool.

SAP Calculations - Can you DIY these?

Or is it? He's not taken any measurements of the existing windows... . Risky game I guess. Out of curiosity, I took down an old back porch which also had a large window and a door. Would I be allowed to include this in my allowance? Any advice on these calculations @tony1851? Is there any way...

SAP Calculations - Can you DIY these?

Using the council. They were quite good this far, giving me loads of advice on their first visit, such as: Put in wall ties every 750mm * 450mm (I assume this horizontal * vertical) If you have a 550mm return to the cavity on a corner, you won't require a windpost (width window 1 + width window...

SAP Calculations - Can you DIY these?

Building a large back extension on my own, on a building notice and without too much background in construction. So I was always going to run in to things I didn't know yet... . Had Building Control out the other day and he gave me a formula to calculate the ratio of windows and doors I would...

    Cracked window lintel

Looking at the overall state of the house: exposed bricks and lintel, I'd say buy yourself an acrow prop. It won't look out of place and 30 GBP for some piece of mind sounds pretty cheap to me.

    40m2 Extension Self-Build

Thursday morning I finished the soakaway, lifting the crates in place, wrapping them in geotextile and covering all sides in pea shingle. I ended up doing 150mm bottom and sides and about 250mm on top, covering it all with about 400mm of soil. I was feeling it after shoveling 2 Ton of pea...
