  1. Nope

One of my many, many pet hates.

Agree. That’s the top of the plug (but I would call it a cover).
  2. Nope

One of my many, many pet hates.

I’d personally be inclined to call the item in the picture a “fused connection Unit” or FCU. My understanding is that as its name suggests it’s an accessory for providing a connection protected by a fuse. I know what a spur is. It’s not the same as one of these.

Bosch dishwasher not emptying, no pump cover in sump?

We have a Bosch. Not long after we moved in I was clearing some food waste out of the drain and accidentally dislodged the pump cover. After that it wouldn’t drain properly and I read online that the pump cover needs to be securely fixed in place for it to drain, so I pushed it in tightly and...

    Lawnmower recommendations

I’ve heard mixed opinions about Flymo. I’d been looking at the Flymo Easiglide Plus 360V but online reviews were describing it as junk so I think I’m going off the idea…

    Lawnmower recommendations

I moved house in June this year and treated myself to a new lawnmower. Ended up buying a budget petrol lawnmower (Yard Force or some rubbish like that). Turned out to be a big mistake as after just 2 uses the engine developed a fault which couldn’t be fixed by following the troubleshooting...

Solar installer raised roof tiles - is this a problem?

In our case the issues were mainly because the Solar Panel owner was renting the roof from us. Basically meant that anyone who bought the house would be limited by which mortgage lenders would work with them. We also had an absolute nightmare trying to find out who the actual owner was as the...

    Egyptian Mummy

Archaeologists have discovered the remains of an Egyptian Mummy covered in chocolate and nuts. They’re calling it the Pharaoh Rocher!

Solar installer raised roof tiles - is this a problem?

Can’t say I’m surprised. The issues we had with solar panels (which admittedly we didn’t discover until we tried to sell the house) put us off them for life!

    LED Ceiling Light Driver

He’s not much of an electrician if he works on live circuits, is he? I’m a DIYer and even I’m not stupid enough to do something like that.

    Stuck screw

A pair of locking pliers. Close them firmly round the head and turn. Worked for me on a very tight screw.

Fluorescent tube doing this - is tube faulty or is it the starter?

I meant availability of fluorescent tubes. I won’t replace with LED if fluorescent tubes are available.

Fluorescent tube doing this - is tube faulty or is it the starter?

Thanks Harry. I suppose whether I replace or not will depend on the availability of tubes.

Fluorescent tube doing this - is tube faulty or is it the starter?

Yes I saw that. Something else to consider. I think I will take down the tube and get some details from the label then look at replacing with an LED tube!

Fluorescent tube doing this - is tube faulty or is it the starter?

Thanks both. I’ll replace tube and starter then.

Fluorescent tube doing this - is tube faulty or is it the starter?

I have two fluorescent tube lights in the garage. Both were there when we moved in so I don’t know how old they are. Recently one of the two has stopped lighting when I turn it on. The two ends glow, and flicker but the tube itself never actually comes on. See the photos for what I mean. Does...

What have you been doing today?

Wife was working today and her parents (who are staying until Monday) were planning to get a lift into Belfast with her so they could do some shopping and wander around. I’d planned to do some DIY tasks, just little things I hadn’t had a chance to do during the week. Wife and her parents were...
