Home Automation - High Voltage side

When we build the extension at the rear of the house I would like to introduce some Home Automation including control of lights (ON/OFF/DIM), control of some specific outlets (e.g. lamps, fans) plus some audio visual stuff. I am happy with the low voltage side of what is needed but I am trying...

    Help for Henry

Twin speed but I haven't got the serial number to hand at the moment. I have checked the cable all the way through and that is fine. So switch and brushes appear to be the next things to check. What is the best way to check the switch with a basic meter? Thanks D

    Help for Henry

Hi, My partners Henry hoover packed in the other day so she went out and bought a new one. I wouldn't mind the old one for the garage and I am pretty sure there isn't much wrong with it. I have checked the fuse and the cable itself but they both seemed OK. I think the motor is probably OK and...

    slipped off a joist

Might be irrational but I could never bring myself to liking push fit fittings and plastic pipe. I am sure it's fine but it as never looked right to me!! D

    Hose Tail Reducer

Part of my compressor set up in my garage has a hosetail that will go to a sandblasting pot. I have used good quality hydraulic fittings to try and keep the bore as wide as possible. The hosetail is about 18mm and I need to reduce it down to attach the hose. Is there such a thing as a hosetail...

    Wiring for a compressor

Oh I see....anyway he has made a nice neat job of it and I feel better about him having done it rather than having a go myself. I had a good feel for the ways of doing it from advice on here but I am glad it has been done professionally. As a decent side bonus he has agreed that when it comes...

    Wiring for a compressor

Final solution was a new CU in the house (12 way I think), a metal MK one with RCD. The tails going into the switch fuse split out with connector blocks (are they Henley blocks?), new cable through the wall to an isolator feeding the compressor. He needs to come back as he couldn't get a 45A...

    Wiring for a compressor

Spark has now been out and essentially has suggested the same solution although I think the distribution board will be in the house with a rotary isolator in the garage. Also pretty sure he said it would include RCD. He also specifically said it would be 45A type C fused. Thanks for your input D

    Wiring for a compressor

To be fair though when they advertise it as the largest 240v single phase compressor and you are a layman (like me) you don't necessarily join the dots!!

    Wiring for a compressor

They recommend a 45A fuse but I suspect it will still be the same motor set up. Did MM charge for the modification?

Can anyone explain how to wire this light fitting up?

On the first photo aren't the 2 wires that go the pendant the wrong way round? I assume it would make no difference but isn't convention to have them the other way about? D

    Broken Ring

Thanks. There are bound to be multiple horror stories in my wiring. Need the spark out ASAP to,at least address this issue and sort my compressor out. D

    Broken Ring

I mentioned the other day in my thread about compressor wiring that I have a socket in the living room that has a disconnected cable due to having melted at some point in the past. It has been playing on my mind a little since. Is this situation dangerous? I susumu the danger lies in some one...
