    Downlighters, regulations etc....

Hi there. Can anyone tell me what the current situation is regarding the regulations and installation of downlighters etc? We are having to think about lighting now and we seem to want to install them in all the rooms, although I have reservations about it re cost and also noise. Do we have to...

    Towel radiator heating elements question...

Hi there, just looking at this webpage http://www.screwfix.com/cats/A334855/Bathrooms/Towel-Radiators/Heating-Elements Am I right in thinking that these can be screwed into a towel radiator and then the heating circuit can also be plumbed in? So I could have the element running off a timer or...

    Tapered boards........

Many thanks to you all, I'm reassured the plasterer isn't going to be spitting feathers as I'd imagined! Cheers.

    Tapered boards........

Thanks Micilin, much appreciated. Do the boards need sealing with PVA or anything else to do before the plasterer starts?

    Tapered boards........

Oops I think I've messed up. I'm putting up a partition wall which I had planned to get plastered and I'd got some knauf sound boards (blue colour) which I was going to lay 2 layers either side of wall. Thing is the boards are tapered, can I still get them skimmed? Would I need to fill the...

Measuring up for windows and doors - query on addon pieces

Hi there. I am saving costs by measuring up for some windows and doors myself - my Fensa reg. builder will be installing them. He's asked me to order some vertical add on pieces for the doors so that the frame is brought in so that the hinges will clear the plaster, (at the moment it's...

Building overhand, health and safety question....

Now there's a thought Thermo, much appreciated. We do have a wall we could possibly do that with, I think I'll mention it to the builder when I see him.

Building overhand, health and safety question....

Many thanks for the reassurances, I am sure you're both right and the wall won't come down but we can't risk it, even though it's such a small possibility. The builder isn't prepared to risk it anyway. Just looking for a way to get around this with scafffold or something.

Building overhand, health and safety question....

Hmm......we really have reached an impasse today, just wondered whether anyone had any more ideas? Is it possible with scaffold to erect a vertical wall of scaffold poles and ply sheets which would be strong enough to deflect anything which falls onto my property? I have about 2 foot between...

    Knackered concrete roof tiles.......

Thanks for the reply Richard C. The old tiles have absolutely no colour left on them at all, just concrete colour now so they will always stand out a mile. So I'll have to do something eventually ie reroof the lot, spray the old tiles etc.

    Knackered concrete roof tiles.......

Hi there, I'm having an extension done and so I need new roofing which is giving me a problem, as the new tiles will look odd alongside the old knackered ones. So, my options are to either re-roof the lot(expensive)/lay the new tiles in matching but knackered reclaimed tiles/lay new tiles on...

Building overhand, health and safety question....

Thanks Tawelfryn, I think the builder is concerned about the possibility of the wall blowing down if we get a strong gale or storm. He'd like the area on the neighbour's side blocked off, to make it double safe. He says if we were using scaffold it would brace the wall and also if any bricks...

Building overhand, health and safety question....

Well it's on the ground that we've really got a problem, as long as everyone their side is safe I think they and the builder will be happy.....

Building overhand, health and safety question....

When building overhand (2 storey extension) to avoid incursion into next door's property, builder now wants to tape off an area on other side of wall which isn't going down too well with neighbours, is there anything else we can do or hire etc to safeguard people on the neighbours property i.e...

    Door/window combination frame making.....

Right then, many many thanks for putting me straight on all this. So, the door frame comes in lengths like for internal frames and is made up on site. The window frames must be made in advance though and come ready to just be fixed to the brickwork and glazed? What glazing system is normally...

    Door/window combination frame making.....

Ah ok, so you buy the hardwood door frame much as you would buy a softwood one for indoors. What about the windows which are to next to it on either side, how would they be made?

    Door/window combination frame making.....

Hi there, I'm having a new porch built which will have an opening for the front door, with windows either side starting from hip height running up to the top of the door frame. The builder isn't going to do the joinery side of things, just the construction work. In all my previous houses...

What's the magic formula for stud walls?

Thanks, but I already went for Knauf slab insulation as it's what they had in the yard. Only problem is that it's 450mm wide so I'll have to cut it down each time. They said it was better for sound insulation than what they had on a roll anyway.

What's the magic formula for stud walls?

Thanks for all the advice, 400 /450 centres it is then. So what other types of insulation are there then? I'm only interested in stuff which is readily available across the counter. Does the mineral wool Come in 400/450 width rolls?
