    Big, stubborn Tree Stump

Thanks both. Ceres, the trunk itself has a diameter of roughly 50cm but the underbody is a bit bigger. I have mostly used a pickaxe, axe and shovel to get this far so yes I do have a pickaxe. I also have a long bar (not too strong though) and a decent (quite long) crowbar. So yes, good...

    Big, stubborn Tree Stump

Hi, I have spent about a day and a half trying to dig out a large tree stump. I have dug about a foot deep all the way round the trunk of a tree and hacked off all the roots as I have made my way round. Please see picture attached. I was just wondering whether anyone has done similar...

2.5mm armoured cable for shed - sanity check please

Apologies, I think my question should have been will the RCD trip before the MCBs. ie if i am using what is technically an OVER rated MCB, will the RCD pick up any smaller faults, acting as a safety barrier?

2.5mm armoured cable for shed - sanity check please

Length of SWA is 15 metres. Longest length of cable to lights and sockets in shed is 2 metres. Not sure about the earth in house. I have no metal service pipes into the shed. Thanks

2.5mm armoured cable for shed - sanity check please

So....... I have done plenty of reading on the topic and I think I am right in thinking the following: I) As my circuit is radial I should ideally have a 4mm cable for a 32A MCB (in the garage). If I use 2.5mm I should only have a 20A MCB. Would it be safe to have a 20A MCB and a 6A...

2.5mm armoured cable for shed - sanity check please

The current consumer unit in the house is an old style fuse box with wire fuses so no RCD. This will be replaced for the latest type of consumer unit, with an RCD. The consumer unit I have for the garage has a 40A 30mA RCD with both a 6amp and 32A MCB. I just really need to understand...

2.5mm armoured cable for shed - sanity check please

I intend to run 2.5mm armoured cable (underground) to my shed and then use a Garage Kit from B+Q (1 RCD and 2 MCBs) in the shed. 1 MCB for light circuit and 1 for a double plug socket. I then intend to ask a Sparky to connect the armoured cable to the fusebox in my house. I am no expert...

    Screed dry in 1 day

Hi, Due to level issues I dug up my old floor and re screeded at 21mm. I know this is pushing the boundaries as it is very thin but I decided to give it a go. Process was as follows: - Got Level off of next room floor and make concrete strips across the room to run a straight edge...

Cement Slurry and SBR (fibres) in a screed

Hi, I have read in other posts about priming a floor with a cement slurry before laying a screed? What exactly is a cement slurry? Does it still need to be wet before laying the screed? As my screed will be relatively thin (21mm) I have considered adding some fibres to the mix. Is SBR a...

    25mm screed

Hi, I intend to screed a floor, ready for tiling, using a 4:1 mix of sharp sand and cement. Is this advisable or is this too thin a coating, which will then be susceptible to cracking etc? I have been advised to maybe using chicken wire underneath or add 'BOND SBR'. Would anyone here...

    Plywood on concrete

It looks like, I have about 30mm to build up. Is chipboard suitable for laying tiles directly on?

    Differing floor levels

I cannot tell if the existing floor has a DPM beneath it. This is why I considered laying another, just in case not. There is not 50mm so I suppose the idea of insulation is removed. However, I am still keen to line the floor with ply wood. I imagine this will offer some heat transfer...

    Plywood on concrete

Hi People, I had a dining room, which was higher than my kitchen. I have broke the screed away and am now looking at ways of building the floor back up to match the kitchen. The obvious choice is screed, on top of the existing concrete. However, I have considered laying a DPM on the...

    Differing floor levels

I have broken the floor and found that 25% of the floor is screeded over on sand and the rest is on concrete. So I need to concrete the area that is not concreted. But how should I make up the height? I can either rescreed or put a DPM over the concrete, add some thin insulation and then...

    Differing floor levels

Although I think its just screed on sand, it is quite weird that no tiles have cracked over time etc etc Is re screeding a floor easy enough for a competent DIYer? Also, would you concrete below the required level and then make up the shortfall with self levelling compound? Is the self...
