Attaching fence post to house wall - DPC required?

Good evening all! I'm shortly looking to put up a new fence *above an existing wall* in our front garden. -BACKGROUND INFO- The (single brick) wall is not in a great state and the intermediary pillars are on the neighbour's side, but she has asked us to put a fence up in order to hide our...

    Mitre Saw

I've unfortunately had a different experience - I bought the Evolution mitre saw, and got truly fed up over its inability to cut consistently at 90 degrees (despite adjustment). Additionally, the bore size on the Evolution is a non-standard size which limit your choice of blades *out of the...

    Mandatory decking slope?

I would be wary of sloping the decking *towards* the wall, just in case this encourages damp (in a perfect world, this wouldn't be an issue, but it would be my concern...)

    Loft boarding advice please

Are your main beams definitely 4x2? They look as though they might be 6x2 from some of the pictures, but hard to say for sure. Just wanted to check!!

    Strongest gravel boards?

How high is the wall going to be? As others have mentioned, I'd be very dubious about the ability of gravel boards to hold any meaningful amount of soil back. I'd go with sleepers...

Best way to meet decking boards over a joist (cut at 90 deg or 45 deg)

Due to an unfortunate mishap where I managed to burn a hole 3 decking boards wide in my decking, I'm having to replace a small section (inconveniently right in the middle of the deck!). I'm OK with replacing the joist that has also been burnt through, but my question is how best to cut the...

To cut sheet ply at an angle or not to...

Evening all, I'm after a bit of hopefully advise or thoughts as to how best to finish the roof of my shed. Thanks to comments, I'm pretty much at the stage of getting the sheet ply on, but have a question as to how to cut. I'm hoping the below image might make it easier to explain: 1. Now on...

What timber for decking ledgers, joists, noggins etc?

Depending on whether any of the timber is going to be in ground contact, I've previously gone for HC4 treated wood, such as this here: https://www.timberclicklondon.com/garden-landscaping-timber-london/garden-decking/deck-joists-london/C24%20Decking%20Joists%2047mm%20x%20150mm It's potentially...

Butt hinges on shed - regular or parliament hinge given circumstances

Just wanted to check back to say thanks very much for all of your help chaps - I'm now the proud owner of a pair of cranked hinges, that have gone on well and look the part!

How to repair scratches in garden table

I'd echo the (random) orbital sander suggestion, on the basis that you're at risk of putting more scratches on it (or sanding across the grain in the first photo) with a belt sander.

    Cladding metal shed?.

I think the issue you may have with simply sticking some cladding on would be condensation/damp issues. You might be able to avoid that by sticking on vertical battens and then cladding, but as others have suggested, I'd perhaps look at painting and/or hiding it with plants. Even if you go...

Butt hinges on shed - regular or parliament hinge given circumstances

Thanks John, much appreciated. I'm not sure I follow with regards to the part about painting though sorry - the ones I've purchased are the following, which are powder coated: https://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke-gate-hinge-cranked-hook-band-epoxy-black-40-x-350-x-135mm/7102j I assume you're...

Butt hinges on shed - regular or parliament hinge given circumstances

Chaps, just wanted to say thanks very much for all of your replies. On the basis of your advice, I've scrapped the butt hinge idea (as much as I love the look of it) and gone for some hook and band hinges. FWIW, the tee-hinges that I'd been looking at were the "heavy duty" Smith & Locke version...

How to measure tongue and groove width?

You'll often have the nominal size (e.g. 25x150mm) which is the size before the product has been planed down. Then the finished size, (e.g. 20x145mm). On top of that, you may have a face size, which is the distance that each board effectively covers once the tongue has been inserted into the...

Butt hinges on shed - regular or parliament hinge given circumstances

Hi all, I now have 4 walls in the shed (picture update attached!) and have made up a door for the opening. I was originally looking to put T-hinges on, but the ones I bought had a *lot* of play in the hinges, to the point where I was very dubious, and I've now acquired some stainless steel...

Building shed from scratch - membrane considerations driving me insane!

Day 10 in the shed build saga... I now have 2 sides framed, membraned, battened, clad, and now up and fixed securely to the base of the shed. I also have all fingers, wife and dog intact, so I'd say things are going pretty well so far... I'll try to post some pictures later in case anyone is...

Building shed from scratch - membrane considerations driving me insane!

Thanks chaps. To confirm, are we recommending that we should have a ply outer as well as cladding (with the cladding attached directly to the ply)? Does this not accelerate the possibility of rot as well (i.e. on the same theory that if I didn't use battens for a breathable membrane, the...

    Decent tape measure and spirit?

I played around with these in Screwfix the other day - they seemed fine for the price. However, with my Dewalt measure, I can easily extend it to 4 metres unsupported without it collapsing - with these, I think it gave way between 2-3 metres.
