    What sander to buy?

Appreciate that you may not have a crystal ball, but what do you intend to sand? Having gone through a number of mouse sanders, I find them painfully ineffective for the most part. I now use a DeWalt 1/4" sander for the smaller jobs, with a delta sander when I need to get into the really small...

Building shed from scratch - membrane considerations driving me insane!

Hi all, firstly apologies for the lengthy post, and if I’m not explaining the situation well – this is my first build and although I’ve read a lot on both this forum and others, a lot of this is still fairly new to me! I'm currently in the middle of building a shed, that essentially will be a...

    Wood finishes

I'm very unimpressed with most water based preservatives these days. I've used the clear and light brown versions of this, to good effect: http://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/product/barrettine-premier-wood-preservative?sid=1&s=625663-bf71d6c720b9ebfe45433c14a23ce51f

Mounting projector on a board into joists

I would definitely use ply and not shelf board - some of those boards can be of dubious quality.

    Cutting T&G in Scaffold Boards?

Hi all, I've just bought a few (new) scaffold boards for a shed floor as they were massively reduced from their new price (and worked out less than buying T&G that would be half the thickness) However, I'm not sure whether they will fit together entirely flush (especially if they are going to...

Making a Door and Door Frame - Help Needed

That's a fantastic looking door foxhole. I'm also looking to build a door, and potentially have a whole load of scaffold boards. Any advice on how to go about this (i.e. did you have to plane the boards before use?) Many thanks!!

How to "level" a very small area of floor surrounded by floorboards

Thanks for your help chaps. In the end, I was pretty pushed for time, but managed to use a piece of spruce furniture board that was wide enough. I then took a planer to it in anger, and managed to get a fairly decent finish, leaving the board 18mm thick in places, whilst approx 5mm towards the...

How to "level" a very small area of floor surrounded by floorboards

We are due to have the carpets replaced in our living room in a week or so. I'm taking the opportunity to sort out a small area by the fireplace which had always had a noticeable dip in the carpet. Turns out on lifting the existing carpet that the original fitters had ignored the difference in...

    Cheap Tools

I would disagree - you are correct from the point of view that once a screw is tightened all the way, then yes, if you're clumsy on the trigger on an impact driver, you would be better off with the correct setting on the clutch of a drill driver. However, given that use of an impact driver lends...

    Cheap Tools

An impact driver will almost have undoubtedly have a *lot* more torque - ordinarily in the 140-200Nm range (versus 20-80Nm for a drill driver, depending on whether its a £20 or £150 model) :)

Treated or untreated timber for a loft?

I'd also add that there shouldn't be any requirement to use treated timber for that purpose - given the amount of untreated wood up there already, if you *did* need to use it, I expect you'd have far bigger problems anyway! Depending on what the issue was with fitting the last LoftZone support...

Sad reflection on the state of the British economy, aka Homebase is at it again!

Tariffs would have reduced the amount of Chinese steel flooding the market - it was the UK government that vetoed this. Simply put in absolute terms, it's cheaper to import than produce here if these trade practices are not regulated.

    Putting in loft panels?

I used the LoftZone StoreFloor system - it's definitely the expensive option compared to either nothing or the loft stilts that I've seen in B&Q. However, what I have been left with is a very stable flooring system that I'm happy walking across (and a lot of insulation underneath it). And as...
