    Porch canopy construction

Hi Vinn, Yes it's all done (..nearly, just got the leadwork, wood staining and the tiled floor). I went for plain clay tiles in the end, the slate looked ridiculous on such a small canopy. I went ahead with the KABE render, the brickwork was in too poor a condition unfortunately. I'm happy...

    Exceeding the manufacturers recommended gauge

Hi Catlad, Yes that's the one, I've finally finished (nearly...). Just got some more painting to do and the leadwork. The gauge ended up being 115mm, but each tile was still double lapped. We've had quite a bit of rain the past two days and (touch wood) it hasn't leaked. If it was on a...

    Exceeding the manufacturers recommended gauge

Its just over 30 degrees. I want to increase the gauge so the spacing doesn't look odd near the ridge

    Exceeding the manufacturers recommended gauge

Hi, I have a small porch canopy to tile (6ft x 2ft). I'm using marley clay tiles which have a max stated gauge of 100mm, am I ok to increase this slightly to 120mm? My reasoning is that I dont want to add too much weight to the canopy and the porch is in a sheltered position so isn't exposed...

    Porch canopy construction

Thanks for the info, yes felt then batten. I was thinking about a slate dry verge for the end http://www.ashbrookroofing.co.uk/all-pitched-roof-products/dry-verge-systems-products/manthorpe-smartverge-linear-dry-verge-system-glv-rh-right-hand-dry-verge-unit-grey

    Porch canopy construction

Think I'm going to go with slates due to the lighter weight. I've got the rafters at 450mm centers, the board is 9mm ply. I've got the option of adding an extra rafter if necessary? Do you think it's needed?

    Porch canopy construction

Think I'm going to have an open ceiling. I'm talking about the soffits on the main roof, it's an old house so they protrude markedly. The first foot outside the porch is always dry after a shower. The pitch on the canopy is 45 degrees

    Porch canopy construction

I've not fixed it all together yet as I'm waiting for the plasterer to render the front and replaster inside the porch. Just thinking ahead as I want to get it sorted before the autumn wind / rain comes. Not having a gutter as the soffits protrude around 9 inches, I have the option to route one...

    Porch canopy construction

Hi all, After having a quote of over £1000 to make a canopy for my porch I've decided to do it myself. I've got the canopy up but now need to tile it. The roof can withstand weights of 50kg/m2, which small tiles would you recommend for this? Am I right in thinking I get a sheet of 9mm ply cut...

Permanent live cable - what to do with it

Can anyone advise on how I can wire two lights up to the current twin and earth. Im assuming the current live wire comes off a loop in lighting circuit at some point. Is the lower diagram suitable? This is what I'd prefer otherwise I'll be coming back on myself with cables

Permanent live cable - what to do with it

Success! (sort of). I bit the bullet and kept drilling upwards into the void and have found the wire. I still don't know what its connected to but its a start. I'm going to make the best of the situation and wire in a new ceiling light for the porch. As I dont want it to be permanently on I'll...

Permanent live cable - what to do with it

It's right above the lintel which is where i need the wall plate for the canopy to sit. I've drilled a couple of inspection holes in the plasterboard behind the lintel (if you come out the door and look straight up) but no joy. It sounds like the cable is free to move but it's the other side of...

Permanent live cable - what to do with it

Theres a ceiling rose near the light but theres only the one wire which goes to the light switch. Theres no switch for the motion detector and no fused switch nearby :-( This is going to end up causing me a headache!

Permanent live cable - what to do with it

Hi All. I'm redoing my porch and currently there is a motion detector wired into one of the lighting circuits. I need to remove this sensor but I can't see where its spurred to as its under the bathroom tiles. Can I terminate the cable in a terminal block, wrap with electrical tape and then...

    Painting bay window tiles

Thanks for the info. I think the paint would take as they aren't clay (I think concrete). I'm going to try painting a small area as there's nothing lost if the whole lot has to come down, it's just a shame, I don't like removing original features. Would masonry paint work (Farrow and Ball)?

Is there a reason why you can't paint them? I don't think pressure washing would help

    Painting bay window tiles

Hello all, I have a 1920's house that has concrete vertical tiles cladding the bay between the first and ground floor. I've had a quote of £1250 to insulate the bay and replace the tiles although my roofer has told me that the joints will be mitred as he says they no longer do the corner...

    GRP canopy for open porch

Does anyone have experience with adding something similar to this: http://www.fibreglassmouldings.co.uk/specs/StrandDoorCanopy-corner-fit.pdf I'm contemplating adding it to my 1930's detached house but am slightly worried it might stick out like the dangly bits on a bulldog. What's the quality...

BBQ hardwood decking area, well it is winter..

Ok so I thought I'd post an update in case anyone is wondering about durability or how hardwood decking stands up to the elements. Well safe to say I haven't had a problem with it, even in winter it doesn't get slippery. In early spring I (contrary to what someone posted earlier on) powerhose...
