    Garage power has no earth...

Hi, I'm just going to get the consumer unit updated as it's the wire wound type. When one of the electricians came round he took the cover off and checked a few things. One thing that was noticed was the red/black with a thick insulation didn't have an earth. After checking it seems that this...

Adding a doorway in single brick garage wall

Hi, Doorway has now been cut and the old double glazed front door has been put in. Apart from a dead hammer drill it all went really well. Although loading up containers with too many bricks that were removed didn't go down too well with my back... Cheers, M

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

So would getting in a building inspector/surveyor be a better bet. Pay for proper advice then get a builder to do the work suggested? M

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

I'll get in a builder. I think in the mean time I'll make a few holes in the ceiling so I can poke a usb snake camera I borrowed into the void and take a look. Thank you for the advice. I'll come back here and let you know what some builders have said.

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

Could it also be due to the supporting wall having an issue? I'm thinking the issues I can see in the supporting walls (I'm at home taking a better look) might mean that joist has dropped a bit(!) M ps thanks for your help so far.

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

I thought that might be the case. I was thinking of ripping down the ceiling to get rid of the horrible curved artexing... obviously I'm not qualified to say what's failed, what type of person would be? Cheers, Marc

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

Thanks for the reply. I can confirm that there never was a supporting wall as I've spoken to a couple of the neighbours with identical houses (apart from the sage). When I pulled up some of the boards in the upstaris bathroom I seem to remember that the joists were 2" wide and I swear they...

Sagging lounge floor, wall above seems to be the issue...

Hi, My house was built in the mid 80's. The lounge is approx 5.6x4m and spans from front to rear of the house. Above this room are the 1st and 3rd bedrooms. The dividing wall for these two rooms is built of what I think is the thermolite blockwork. The weight of this wall seems to be making...

    Honeywell sundial y plan issue...

Hi, I noticed the other day that the radiators were getting slightly warm in the mornings when the hot water was coming on. I removed the actuator (note only one screw was holding it in place...) The valve stem moves. 10-15 deg to the left, 5-10 to the right, when 0 is at right angles to...

Retro Fitting a Double Glazing Window...

Hi, My folks in France have a single glazed wooden window, only about 300 X 300mm. It's a north facing window so its a little cold in the room. The thought is to replace the single glaze and put in a piece of double glazing... so my questions are... 1. is this a good idea? 2. does a...

Convert a water rad to an oil rad...

Hi, Here's the plan, though there might not be a solution... My parents, who live in France have central heating, but as it's sort of hot in the summer, they would like to have a mains powered towel radiator in the bathroom... I know you can buy them as the local Brico has them, but the...

Plastic window panels... Help with locating scome

Hi, I'm looking for some acrylic/plastic sheets to replace the cracked door panes... the thing is these are not clear or opaque but smooth on one side and bumpy on the other. The bumpy side is how can I say... looks like lots of ridges going in the same direction. I know B&Q used to sell it...
