    Which sub base

We had 12t of recycled concrete to use first, and it went down great and had more dust and was about £11 or £14 a tonne. Needed spraying after it went down to limit dust coming from it. Next load was proper limestone type 1 at a cost of nearly 3 times as much. The proper stuff just seemed to...

    Shed Felt advice

I used EPDM rubber to redo our shed roof this year, scraped the remains of felt off and stuck the rubber straight on. It came with a roller and pot of adhesive. It’s supposed to have a 50 year warranty (I won’t care if it lasts 30 years as I’ll be long moved by then)

    Led strip lights for steps

We’re planning to fit led strip lights under 2 paved steps in the garden, we’ve seen the Philips Hue range but wondered if there’s a cheaper alternative anyone would recommend? We would need 2 x 5m Strips approx

Priming slurry and grout for porcelain paving

As above, after recommendations for a priming slurry and grout for a porcelain patio. Ideally I'd like as small a joint as I can get away with. Is there a preferred slurry and grout?

Best sander to sand treated gravel boards

Haven’t decided on a fence stain yet, would you recommend a water based one? And worthwhile as I have some free labour for a few days and need them for a look I’m trying to achieve (not actually used as gravel boards)

Best sander to sand treated gravel boards

I’m after a sander to sand approx 60 treated gravel boards (150mm x 1.8m each) to stain. Any recommendations of a type of sander to get please? Preferably easy on the pocket as it’s the only things I’ll need to sand

    Plate compactor running rough

Just tried letting it idle with the air filter removed and it ran a lot better, so guessing the filters blocked? It says to clean it with solvent the soak it in engine oil? That sound right?

    Plate compactor running rough

Bought a Rocwood plate compactor to help level ready for a new patio and only used it about 6 or 7 hours and it’s suddenly started running rough. It’s full of fuel, oil level is fine, air filter cleaned (was quite dusty) even on full revs it seems to be misfiring slightly, or not revving...

    Help finding timber

Cheers big-all Didn’t even think about gravel boards. Picked up some earlier 19mm x 150mm, quick sand and stained with Ronseal one coat Harvest Gold. Going to look great... When the Mrs has painted the 100+ gravel boards, twice (for good measure) if she hasn’t divorced me by then I’ll get...

    Help finding timber

I want to fix treated timber across some 1.8m fence panels, and stain them a gold colour so it looks a little like red cedar. Ideally I want something about 11mm or 14mm thick, by 100mm to 150mm deep. And obviously 1.8m or 3.6m in length. Tried everywhere but struggling Any ideas where I can...

    Newbie type 1 questions

Thanks guys Got 16 tonnes for £200 delivered (place a mile up the road has its own crusher), and 8 wheel grab lorry for £250 to get rid of everything first. Didn’t think it too bad a price in Herts/Essex Said they grab most of it out then tip the remainder Can the type 1 get wet/rained on...

Buying a red Japanese acer tree

were after a fairly tall (8ft or taller) red Japanese acer tree, we can’t find any local to us in garden centres, would ordering a tree that size/cost online be a bit of a risk? Kind of worried about spending £200/£300+ and it arriving and being not exactly how we expect

Is there a preferred wood stain?

I’m looking to stain some treated batten to mount horizontally across some fence panels with a small gap between each batten and stain them in a red cedar colour stain (rather than actual fence paint) Is there a ‘better’ stain to use? Something that’ll last a few years hopefully as they won’t...

Choosing the correct porcelain paver size

Thanks guys Bsr that was my next question, seems to be 2 ways to lay porcelain paving. A tiler I had round to look at it said onto a solid concrete slab as you would indoors, but several YouTube video shows show it as compacted type 1 and a mortar bed?

    Cladding over existing fence

Also, if they’re your neighbours fence panels, I’d assume the concrete posts are his too. Be careful a year down the line he doesn’t decide to replace it all and dig up the concrete posts. Unlikely, but a possibility As a side note, love the look of the cladding/batton horizontally, it’s...

Choosing the correct porcelain paver size

Sorry conny when I said a raised patio I didn’t mean on a raised platform or joists, I just meant it’s higher than the bottom part of the garden. It’ll be on a 6” deep type 1 base and then wet mortar bed, so laid in the usual way. I mean are there any issues I could possibly encounter with the...

Choosing the correct porcelain paver size

ive finally decided on porcelain pavers for our raised patio, will be approx 70m2 in total. I’ve fallen in love with some 60cm x 120cm pavers I’ve seen, but realise they weigh the same as a small adult. Other option is the standard 60cm x 60cm size. Pro’s and con’s of each? I want a really...
