New MCB needs an isolator switch

We've been getting quotes in for some electrical work - which includes replacing the main board. Only one electrician mentioned that I should contact Scottish Power to get them to fit an isolator switch, which would then allow the board to be isolated from the main supply and thus preplaced...

How can I test the earth cable is actually earthed?

Gents, Thanks for the replies. I'm think getting someone in is probably best as there are a number of things I'm unsure of - I aslo need someone to test the upstairs ring main (as per my other posting). Thanks for your help. Cheers Elliott

How can I test the earth cable is actually earthed?

Hi, Was going to replace a plastic light switch (1 bulb on/off) with a chrome version. The existing cable into the light switch is 2 core and earth so it should be easy to connect the earth to the back of the switch plate. However, when lifting floorboards I found the following junction...

Upstairs ring main has 2 loops

Paul, The tester was a £20 job from B&Q - turn the dial to the correct value and touch the 2 cables and the current form the battery runs through and the needle moves It's a fair point re the local electrician. Thanks for everyone's help.

Upstairs ring main has 2 loops

Gents - I appreicate all the interest but I'm a bit confused.... I'm not sure what the terms RFC and CPC mean? Would this make a difference to my original question - how it seems I've 2 loops for the one ring main? I'm fairly confident that the 2 loops up stairs are continuous (i.e. not...

Upstairs ring main has 2 loops

Adam, There were only 3 wires in the main cable - the live, neutral and a bare earth - each one (live, neutral and earth) was a collection of individual wires. It looked like 3 for each (does that make 9?) but I'll double check.... Elliott

Gents, Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I did some more checking last night. With the upstairs ring main fuse at the mcb off upstairs sockets off. Upstairs & downstairs lights and sockets on....and vice versa. So the 4 mcb fuses are correctly labelled up/s or down/s lights or...

Upstairs ring main has 2 loops

Hi davy, Thanks for the help, to answer your questions: 1) I'm not 100% sure it is 4mm, it looks bigger than the 2.5mm with I bought to do the spurs. I'll take a closer look tonight. 2) Is connecting up radials to make a ring safe? 3) The ring main is on a 30 (amp or ma?) fuse at the main...

Upstairs ring main has 2 loops

Fred, Thanks for getting back so soon. To add some more detail... 1) The four cables are coming out of the cavity wall in an upstairs room beneath the floorboards. So they are only visible beneath the floor in the upstairs room. I can't see down the cavity or behind the mcb on the ground...

Upstairs ring main has 2 loops

Hi, My question is trying to understand why I have two loops upstairs for one ring main.... In process of changing single for doubles and adding a couple of spurs on the upstairs ring main. I've done the following tests: 1) Fuse off on MCB (marked upstairs sockets) and every socket...
