    Intumescent door strips

I am fitting my first fire door and the frame kit came with strips of intumescent seal and with the frame grooved to take the strips. Wishing to get it right first time, could I ask how the strip is fixed in the groove - pins or adhesive? and also, where the hinges are screwed to the frame...

    How much is "Up to"?

There was every opportunity for the foam to expand to its maximum potential and I would have expected the foam to ooze out of the hole once it had filled it. As I said, I would have reluctantly accepted 50% of the claimed figure but it wasn't even that.

    How much is "Up to"?

The site was a horizontal slot in brickwork where I had removed 2 courses in a wall. The whole area was liberally sprayed with water before commencement. The can was shaken the required number of times. I take your points about optimum working conditions but they are not clearly...

    How much is "Up to"?

I bought a can of Polycell expanding foam to fill a large hole in a wall and the can said "Produces up to 15 litres of foam" Well, 15 litres is about 3 gallons so I envisaged 3 x 1 gallon cans side by side and that was nearly double what I required. However I could only complete half the...

    Soil pipe fire collar

Maybe I was mistaken, but the collars I saw on the internet appeared to be a metal collar clipped round the pipe with the active marerial on the inside thus the metal would restrain the reaction from expanding outward - have I got this wrong?

    Soil pipe fire collar

Thanks to all for your replies: There still seems to be a variety of answers to this one! The fact is that, due to a soil pipe joint just below the ceiling, I will have to put the collar just above te ceiling plaster anyway - I had hoped that that would be the correct location but there is...

    Soil pipe fire collar

My bathroom is above my garage and the soil pipe runs down through the garage. I had a building inspector in for a separate matter and he recommended an intumescent fire collar round the soil pipe to prevent fire getting into the bathroom should a fire in the garage melt the soil pipe. Could...

    Fixing a wooden door frame

May I have the benefit of your experience please? Once I have cut through a 9 inch solid brick wall to make a doorway, l will have to fit the supplied 130mm x 29mm door frame kit to the brickwork opening which will obviously be a little rough. What should I use to fix the frame, nails...

    Lintel and mortar mix

DAZB, Thank you for helping me understand the lintel fixing process. Some DIY books can be very vague on this type of information, you have been a big help.

    Lintel and mortar mix

What type of slate do you mean please - or am I confusing myself with tiles? Thank you

    Lintel and mortar mix

Belated thanks to the Expert Regulars who assisted me recently with advice concerning a fire door installation. I am now running through what I need to do to put the lintels in place. I propose to insert two 65 x 100 x 1200 reinforced concrete lintels side by side into the space left by...

    Fireproof door confusion

No - I live in south Essex; for my sins. The reason for the sizes - height mainly, is that a hole cut in the wall up to a suitable brick course is 2035mm hence the door required being 2035 less 35mm (frame) = 2000mm In my ignorance I thought that it would be better than reinserting a...

    Fireproof door confusion

    Sorry, I mean 2035mm (2000mm door)

    Fireproof door confusion

My ideal dimensions would be a notional 600mm door (just sufficient for domestic appliance clearance and withg a height to accomodate the distance from the floor to the underside of the most convenient brick course of 1035mm ie a 1000mm door. Most standard doors are a lot wider and taller I find.

    Fireproof door confusion

I am planning to put a door through a 9inch solid internal wall into an integral garage thus I will require a 30 min fire door and frame. Life would be a lot sweeter if I could have a door to my sizes rather than a "stock" size (mainly so its height would fit just under a course of bricks)...

If it aint broke dont fix it

I have been running a Potterton Kingfisher 2 (cast iron, floor mounted) for about twenty years and so far it has needed no attention. (£480 including labour to fit at the time.) If I eventually decide to change this boiler, I am going to have to have a condensing boiler with all the built...

    BS 5997 cost

Thanks, Woody, The light of reason! I will go with your suggestion of sizing and leave it to the building inspector to raise any issues. Thanks also to all who took the trouble to comment on my concerns.

    BS 5997 cost

I finally got through to a copy of BS5977 at the library and althought it taught me a few things, it didn't actually decribe the weight calculation process - so not a good result there. I guess I could have asked a building inspector, but as I was planning to do the job myself, I wanted to...

    BS 5997 cost

Thanks for your replies - I hadn't thought about the library. Yes its just a single doorway in a coventional house with a nine inch solid wall so it should be straightforward - I'm just off to the library. Thanks again.
