How Many Times Do tradesmen leave you dissatisfied?

I did say this is when they have already been round. I wouldn't expect them to turn up and just magic stuff out of thin air. I suppose yes it's a way of costing the time spent in getting the materials. But in my experience customers are more likely to feel cheated when this happens. I think...

How Many Times Do tradesmen leave you dissatisfied?

It's a good job I've got a pure mind!

    Best free internet security??

I like Avira - plus I do occasional scans with Spybot or Malwarebytes. In addition I connect through Sandboxie. Makes me feel a whole lot safer! http://www.sandboxie.com/

    Stripping old beams.

A previous occupier covered the lounge beams of my 1840s cottage with horrible black veneer panels. Underneath the veneer the beams are coated with paint and varnish. I have no idea if the paint contains lead and am cleaning them slowly and cautiously with Nitromors Superstrip. That said I'm...

    Extradition of Christopher Tappin

Anyone else concerned about our extradition arrangements with America? In particular the recent extradition of Christopher Tappin. I wonder if he is in an orange jump suit and shackles now? I mean he is clearly a very dangerous pensioner...

How Many Times Do tradesmen leave you dissatisfied?

I was tempted to be flippant when I saw the title of this thread. After all - I'm not that kind of woman! But on the whole I've been lucky. Best one recently was a guy I picked from the Gas Safe Register. I was partly guided by the pics - he was one of the few who didn't look like he...

    Finishing off stripped pine beams.

I am painstakingly removing years of paint to retore the beams in my cottage. What do people recommend for a finish? Or should I just leave them? I've heard linseed oil mentioned elsewhere. Cheers.

    Responsibility for chimney flashing.

In our row, the fireplaces are all on the west side - so they don't butt onto each other and chimneys aren't shared. On the other side of me the roofline continues straight on and we measured a fencing line going by the middle of the party wall. On the side in question, the neighbouring house...

    Responsibility for chimney flashing.

I live in a row of terrace cottages. The next house to me is stepped up a little as is the roofline - so the demarcation line is clear. However my chimney stack is inset a little within next doors roofline. The chimney flashing on my neighbour's side - ie the side which meets his roof needs...

    small hole in ceiling

In an earlier post of mine. I was quoting suggestions on the net. Yes it does look as if I will have to bridge the gap with something. Maybe a bit of ply would do it? Or I could go begging at a builders merchant for a scrap of plasterboard!

    small hole in ceiling

Ah but if I got any more damp - I could have a decorative rust stain! (makes a change from common or garden water) :D

    small hole in ceiling

Hi folks A surface area of about 2 x 1/2 inch of paint came off revealing the plaster. But there is a hole at one end where the plaster itself has come away revealing what I assume is plasterboard which has crumbled at that point. I was investigating and ended up poking my finger through - with...

    small hole in ceiling

Due to leaky roof/guttering I had a damp problem last year. Now that the roof etc has been done am redecorating. The bedroom ceiling at the window end curves down to meet the wall. When chipping off some loose ceiling paint at the join, some plaster came away leaving a hole about the diameter of...

Matt over silk issue strikes again

I got half way across the wall when I realised my matt emulsion was in fact silk. Dohhhh... I'm getting mixed opinions about what to do. Can I just sand and paint over with matt? Or should I prime with something? I have some undercoat (but for wood) if that will do.

    stone guttering needs sealing/lining

But the guttering is stone not concrete. No chance of removing it. It's an architectural feature of a row of old stone cottages.

    stone guttering needs sealing/lining

As an alternative to Acrypol, someone has suggested fibreglass. But a neighbour has said that, like Acrypol, the area needs to be completely dry?

You are all wonderful. Thank you so much!

    stone guttering needs sealing/lining

I don't think getting rid of the gutters is an option. The stone guttering is a feature of the whole row of cottages which date back to about 1840 and I'm in the middle! But I had never heard of Acrypol. Will look into that. Many thanks!

    stone guttering needs sealing/lining

Am getting some damp above the windows upstairs and the problem seems to be that the old stone guttering needs lining. One contractor has recommended lead lining. Another has recommended bitumen/torch on felt. In each case they remove the bottom rows of tiles and slot the lining underneath. The...

Whining noise from Candy built in freezer

Freezer about 3 year old is working but occasionally there is a whining sound for a minute or two - like the noise you sometimes get from a tap when there is some air trapped. Any idea what this could be?
