    Painting over rusty plaster bead

I'm decorating a house that has a few areas where the metal plaster bead on the wall corners has surface rust. In almost all cases its's superficial and easily sands off leaving bright metal underneath. I have tested the walls with a damp meter and there is no sign of dampness in the walls...

    Covering over oil based gloss

I'm decorating a house that has a very thick (but sound) layer of what I think is oil based gloss on the plaster around the window (why do people do these things?) I want to paint the room in matt emulsion but am worried about lack of adhesion or bubbling. I have rubbed it down to a matt...

    Garage wiring options

Thanks, all, for the replies and the interesting debate! Having inspected the socket in the kitchen I can confirm that its on a ring and that the existing garage socket is a spur is taken from this (on an RCD protected circuit.) This raises an interesting question: Why whoever put the...

New control unit with thermostat for a Baxi Bermuda

Thanks footprints. I'm a capable DIYer and have previously fitted a wireless thermostat to the heating circuit of a combi but I have never worked on a unit that does both domestic HW and CW and don't have a wiring diagram, hence the question.

New control unit with thermostat for a Baxi Bermuda

We just bought a house that has a Baxi Bermuda fire/back boiler with heating/water controlled by a Randall Set2. We can't afford to replace the back boiler yet, but does anyone know if it's possible to replace the controller with one that has a thermostat for the heating? It looks like it...

    Garage wiring options

I just bought a house that has what I think is some suspect wiring in the attached garage. I would like to sort it out so am after some advice on the best and safest option. Power usage out there will be low. A double 13A socket for a freezer and lighting. The existing wiring is taken...

Turning off hot water (combi-boiler) to work on taps

I can't locate any isolators and was thinking of putting one in whilst I'm at it. Wouldn't it be better on the "domestic hot water out" of the boiler so I can use it for work on anything else "downstream"? Thanks for the replies so far, btw. :)

Turning off hot water (combi-boiler) to work on taps

This is a bit of a newb question, so apologies! I need to take a hot tap apart to either repair or replace it and need to (obviously) turn off the hot water. Our boiler is a Worcester 35CDi so hot water is "on demand" from the boiler. I don't seem to be able to find a valve to shut off...

    Quote for soffit vents?

Thanks again! I've seen no signs of that but it's quite possible as I've been most impressed with the quality of the refurb - things like 10mm pipe for the heating, magnatec fitted, high quality boiler, consumer unit properly labelled - all these things suggest the guys that did it knew what...

    Quote for soffit vents?

As far as I can tell there is no tile ventilation at all: I'm assuming vented tiles would be obvious? There's no boarding at all and it doesn't look like the eaves are blocked (if they are I can un-block them)

Purpose of a hole left in a chimney breast?

Thanks for the quick reply! :D ...any suggestions for making it look more attractive without blocking it (besides covering it with a fire?)

    Quote for soffit vents?

I'm buying a '60s house that's been extensively refurbed. It's largely been done to a very high standard but one issue I have noticed is that there is no under-eaves ventilation or ridge vents for the loft. The loft insulation is 250mm, so I think I'm going to get loft condensation and want...

Purpose of a hole left in a chimney breast?

I'm buying a mid '60s property that's been extensively renovated and have noticed something that I need advice on. It had a horrible ('60s) electric fire/surround on the (un-used) chimney breast in the living room. The house has very good gas central heating so no electric fire is...

Help - Water leaking from Automatic Air vent on boiler

Fear not, Tony - the inner sanctum of the combustion chamber remains intact  ...the cap I'm referring to is on the outer case.

Help - Water leaking from Automatic Air vent on boiler

Got a bit of a post-script to this post. I had the system drained again today for some more work and on re-filling I left the cap on the offending auto air vent tightly closed until the whole system was re-pressurised then opened it (before using the boiler) to vent the heat exchanger. As...

Help - Water leaking from Automatic Air vent on boiler

Cheers, Mick - that's what I thought. ...been looking at the manual and considering giving it a go myself - do you reckon it's DIYable? Looks pretty straightforward but then these things always do, don't they?

Help - Water leaking from Automatic Air vent on boiler

I did some work on my heating system today, which is a pressurised system with a Worcester 35CDi II combi boiler. I drained it, replaced a couple of old radiators and re-filled it. All went well, no leaks on repressurising, but when I fired up the hot water it vented steam and hot water...

Running boiler for DHW with CH circuit drained?

Thanks for the reply Dan. The boiler has isolation valves on CH flow and return and an internal CH bypass loop. Could I just use these?
