Replacement stained glass in a door.

Hi, have a door which is about 100 years old with a stained glass window in it. The window is made up of about 100 pieces of glass held in place by H-shaped lead strips. One of the small pieces has cracked. If I was to replace this piece of glass, which measures about 3 inch square, do I...

Bolts in stone or brick wall removal

They maybe fixed in place with resin, they don't look like a shield anchor type fixing as the hole in the wall is too small. I'd go for the angle grinder, cut back to just below the surface of the wall then polyfilla over the remains.

    drainage quiries, pipe depth

Almost finished an extension project and one of my last projects before it can be signed off is to lay some pernament drainage to replace the temporary buckets which I keep having to empty. Been trying to make head or tail of part H and have looked at some online resources but still have some...

Heavy duty shelf for a 4 foot vivarium?

55kg can be easily supported by a properly fitted shelf. Screwfix sell brackets which are rated at 70kg per bracket so a few of these with some sturdy planks accross should do nicely. Make sure the brackets are fitted to the wall with sutible fixings. If it's plasterboard then use a stud...

    Sleeve Bolt or Anchor Bolt

Make sure the structure is well braced/triangulated so there are no twisting forces on the post bases. Don't rely on the post bases to keep the structure upright, the structure should stand up on it's own before being fixed into the bases.

    How many acro props ?

I had a book which recommended 1 pair of props per 900mm (3 feet) of opening width so a 3350mm opening would require 4 pairs (8 props total). This is assuming you don't have any joists bearing into the wall just above the opening or other unusual loading conditions which may require extra props.

Due to a problem with a sewer under my driveway part of my driveway has subsided. The overall area of the drive is about 30 square meters and about a quarter has been affected by subsidence from the faulty drain. The sewer (a public sewer) has been repaired by the local water authority so I...

Advice on my upcoming outbuilding project.

For planning, providing the building is under 2.5m high and does not cover more than 50% of the garden (any existing extensions/outbuildings must be considered in the 50%) and also the house is not a listed building and your permitted development rights have not been removed with an artical 4...

re-using a window in an extension.

Just wondering if it would be allowed to build an extension then remove the window from between the extension and the house and re-fit it in the outside wall of the extension. Doing so would save quite a bit of money and also avoid the old window going to waste. It's a PVCu window about 10...

    Certificate of lawful development, expiry?

Hi, I am thinking about doing a loft conversion at some point within the next few years and this may include a hip to gable conversion. However I am concerned that the "loophole" which currently allows hip to gable conversions as PD maybe removed at some point in the future. If I was to apply...

Wallpapering between dado and picture rail...

Depending on how the dado if fixed it should not take more than a crowbar to remove it and a bit of polyfilla to patch up the holes, wait for filler to cure, sand smooth then paint/paper. If the dado has been fitted with screws and the screws filled over you should be able to prise the filler...
