Hmm.. the local authority building regulations bloke here told me not to get too technical when I mentioned IP56! All he did was check a table that had 2 sections. As my query concerned 'outside work' he said it fell into the 1 which needs pre notifying & getting a qualified person to carry out...

I do indeed. Forgive me, as I don't know your background/qualifications, but I interpreted PP to say that if everything went into a plug socket etc etc then notification is not needed & regulations were met. But I do stand to be corrected, and that may only apply if I used a pre assembled/tested...

Helpful advice always gratefully received! Can't say I've read it from front to back every day, but doesn't the use of appropriate IP rated components + an RCD plug + 50cm trench + warning tape etc comply with PP? Not being completely au fait with the various components doesn't mean that...

Fixing tallish piece of wood to concrete

Hi. I want to fix a 2 foot high (x6" x4") wooden post in a greenhouse which has concrete flooring. Do I screw a shorter piece of 6"x4" wood to the concrete first, then fix the post to that using something like 2"x2" supports? Are there special 'brackets'? Or is there a more professional way? Thanks.

2.5mm it is then, thanks, just wanted to check it wouldn't do any harm to go for the higher rating. Re terminating, thanks for mentioning that. I knew I had to use glands of some sort. I've seen some brass looking 'gland packs' which have 'earth tags', but I was planning to use a junction box...

    Depth for electrical cable outdoors

Thanks for replies. Not so much digging at one end then, but more at the other! (Softus, I want to get a trench dug, then get the electrician round and say I want to go from A to B, trench is dug, how much?).

    Depth for electrical cable outdoors

Hi, I want to run some cable from my house to the bottom of the garden where I will soon (I hope) have a new greenhouse. I'll get someone in the do the electrical bits, but in preparation I want to dig a trench for the cable to lie in. The top half of the garden is (and will be lawn). The bottom...

Does a weak mix for slabs mean problems?

Thanks everyone, its definitely a bit harder today, so I'm really glad I didn't rip it all up and redo it thevery next day, which did go through my mind. So, just the pointing to do before I start on the next job. And thanks for the stuff about glass, I'll double check what arrives with the...

Does a weak mix for slabs mean problems?

I want to put a greenhouse (aluminium, so lightweight) on top of an existing paving slab patio. As the slabs were not completely level & some were loose, I thought I'd re-lay it. The foundations are concrete (of varying height) from a previous building. I used the 5 spot method, and sand &...

Ceiling rose - so many wires...

I have a 3 bulb light fitting in a bedroom. I want to replace it with a single bulb fitting. I have a new rose etc, but... there appear to be 4 sets of wires coming out of the ceiling, & I think all have red, black & green/yellow wires (its a bit difficult to be sure as there seems to be some...
