    Wood filler

I need to improve some joints in the gate I have built. Is it true you can use some sand paper, gently rub some of the wood, mix the dust with glue and use this as filler? Or is there a better way? Any help appreciated.

    Wooden Gate (again)

Thanks. I was going to use feather edge to create the side panel. I was thinking, I could forget the cross beam and use some noggins to stop the middle post from twisting?

    A new wooden gate

I need to install a new gate in quite a wide opening. The opening is 1600mm wide so I'm thinking of constructing the frame like my drawing, then adding the gate and side panel later. Does this look like a good idea? I'm not sure about the cross beam but I don't want the middle post to...

    Garden gate

If my gate is 900mm wide, how far apart should my posts be; 940mm? Leaving a gap of 20mm each side of the gate? Thanks.

    Wooden Garden Gate

I want to construct a couple of garden gates, one down each side of my house. I need both gates to be 900mm wide, but my openings are 1400 and 1800. I understand the posts need to be 100mm wide but that still leaves a small gap on one of the openings, and a bigger gap on the other opening...

    Part exchanging my van

Thanks Burnerman. It's a large Vauxhall dealership. He glanced at it and said £2000, but in the last week something went wrong on it and the mechanic at a local garage pointed out the additional problems. I'm wondering whether to get all the repairs fixed and take my time looking for a...

    Part exchanging my van

I'm thinking of part exchanging my Vauxhall Combo, it's worth about £2000. It needs about £500 worth of repairs; - needs new drive belt - both rear road springs need replacing - needs a dent sorting Will a dealer pick up on these and knock £500 off my price, or not worry about the...

Has anyone made their own trellis?

19 x 38 roofing battens, have them stained brown at the Woodyard. Hire yourself a nail gun that fires 38mm brads and away you go.

    Small concrete plinth

Good point, I didn't think of that. The light is about 500mm high so I guess I should dig a bit more out. And yes, I am going to put some plastic duct in the base ready to pull a cable through.

    Small concrete plinth

I want to build a concrete plinth (300mm x 300mm x 100mm) and fix a light to it outside. I guess I should remove a piece of turf, construct some form work the size I want, fill it and tamp down? Once it's dry, remove the timber? Ballast 6:1? Many thanks.

    Extending our drive

We have a large, thick concrete drive (was part of a farm where the tractors used to sit). I want to make it wider by 500mm, to the full length 8.0m. I have dug out and fixed timber to contain the new concrete. Do I use ballast 6:1? Should I put in some temporary timber peices and do...

Raising the level of my lawn

I have a large dip in my lawn, about 5 metre diameter, and 1 metre deep (in the middle). I would like to level it off. I guess I just fill it with top soil (throwing the top soil on top of the extg grass) until it is level and then throw some grass seed down and watch it grow. Is this...

    Holly tree

I have just had a Holly tree cut down and removed leaving me with the trunk at ground level, it's about 12 inches in diameter. I would like to dig down about 3 inches and then gravel over the area. Will I hit any roots when I dig my 3 inches out (do they grow down, or out)? or should I...

    Clay soil

I've scraped the lawn to a depth of about 6 inches off the front garden, the soil has quite a lot of clay in it. I've read on this site that I will need to dig in lots of soil conditioner (composted organic matter) to open up the pores before laying top soil and then turf. I don't know...

Brick on edge to retain gravel

Thanks Lou but I won't be able to do it, no time - no skill. I don't mind paying but hate having to pay too much.
