    Alternator problem

This was like mine: http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/TheAntiqueTrade/IMG_0001_032.JPG Unfortunately I dropped it and decided the damage was too much to repair. I lovely bit of kit, nicer to se than a digital one as the analogue display gives a nice 'average' reading rather than dance around...

    Alternator problem

Typical of Halfrauds, someone with no knowledge advising, if it aint charging then they will sell you a new battery on a daily basis perhaps! Well the chances of the belt driving a fan on a Citroen are about zero! But yes, the fan belt, if you prefer 50 year old terminology :) Check the...

Checking the belt would be the most obvious first port of call. Julian

New boiler install with low gas pressure

That makes sense, so it dates back to town gas and the old gasometers. I was thinking a bit more about it: Those little Camping Gaz stoves that run direct from the disposable bottle. They make a fair old hissing sound from the burners so that would become annoying on a domestic gas cooker. So...

New boiler install with low gas pressure

I have a question which I hope is OK to ask here as it seems appropriate: Why do we supply appliances like boilers with such a seemingly pitiful gas pressure? Not that I have a clue really but you'd think about 25psi or thereabouts would be better, you could use micro bore pipe throughout and...

Boiler won't run from a generator in a powercut.

Similarly, you will find that these cheapo little £65 generators will not run a fridge compressor rated at (say) 300 watts. The reason is that the generator will not cater for the large momentary starting current surge that many products require. You basically need to buy a better and bigger...

Garden shed base - lay concrete directly on the grass?

I've done a few bases for workshops, normally very thick to take track laying plant etc. My theory is that you work out the cost of the excavation/sub-base/ compactor etc and use that money instead to buy yourself extra concrete thickness. It's easier and if you excavate down to find a sound...

No Outlook Express with Windows 7

That's not the point. The OP wanted a cheap email sub for OE for W7. Live Mail is bundled onto W7 I think so that is a solution. Julian

No Outlook Express with Windows 7

Hmmm, dunno. Click the windows symbol in the bottom left corner of the screen and in the search box type windows live mail. It pops up for me with just W & I entered! It's on my Windows 7 so I don't see why yours should differ. Julian

    gas water heaters

Indeed, they look really simple. I've no idea how they work but there doesn't appear to be room for a conventional 'gas valve' as you would find on a conventional boiler. Maybe there's just a pilot light and a bi-metal strip controlling gas flow to the burner, some sort of flame failure device...

    Holiday apartment re-fit costs

Thanks for the replies. The job is question would be a few miles north of Kendal just off the A6, but it's just more of an exercise as a consequence of some properties we're looking at. There's actually a potentially even bigger job on the cards now on another property we looked at nearer the...

    Holiday apartment re-fit costs

I'd appreciate any suggestions regarding likely costs from anyone with any experience in such matters. I understand that with the information given only very generalised approximations are the best I could hope for, but don't let that bother you as I'm only after ball-park figures at the moment...

    gas water heaters

That's the way forward I think, heat only and a new storage tank with immersion that's invaluable if the boiler packs up. Conventional motorised valves etc. One thing with the gas option is the requirement for an annual safety check thing, which as a landlord is an additional cost, but...

    gas water heaters

Thanks Gas, that was practically the reply I was expecting to hear. Basically it's to go in a skip! So the next question now looms: We have a choice of gas or electricity for heating/hot water. I think the economy seven convectors and large DHW tank are pretty good these days, but I wonder...

    gas water heaters

Hi to all as this is my first post on the forum. My wife has inherited her grand parent's (deceased) house recently. It's a very solidly built (probably) 50's built 3 bed semi. It's in a time warp and needs a new kitchen and either central heating or maybe storage heaters fitting as it has...
