Looking to find my wife another automatic car in the near future, needs to be 1600cc to 2000cc, a pal at work suggested the vw golf, 2006 to 2008 era. Don't mind if its diesel or petrol. Anyone have any knowledge of auto golfs from this era?

Tell me about it, we had a 2003 Micra with only 11k miles on it and the chain had stretched, spoke to folk in the know Nissan wise and it turns out a lot of early Nissan stuff that shared components with Renault had timing chains made of chocolate!! Needless to say we sold it within 1 month!!

Good luck with this, and I really mean it!!!! We had a Hyundai Lantra a few years back with the same symptoms you describe, we changed voltage regulator 3 times, we changed alternator 2 times, we had an Auto Electrician look at it, we had 3 different batteries fitted, we cleaned every earth...

As John said, timing chain issues, our Nissan Micra only had 11k miles on it and it kept throwing up an engine light on the dash, after speaking to many guys "in the trade" it turns out the chains are made of chocolate and our chain had stretched!! Don't know if this is affecting your car though.

With a full Toyota history I hope this is not the case, will have a look at the dip stick Mon morn.

Cheers guys, done a bit more digging and found quite a few problems listed, especially in my price range because they are all high milers. Looks like we are veering towards the Honda CRV Automatic now, these do seem to have good reports about them.
