What Base for Encaustic Floor Tiles On Suspended Floor?

Thanks, is WBP ply what used to be called marine ply, i.e. water resistant? And could you explain 6mm backers please?

What Base for Encaustic Floor Tiles On Suspended Floor?

My wife wants the hall carpet replacing with encaustic tiles (house is late Victorian). The area is an L-shape about 3 metres long on each leg. The floor is a suspended one with floorboards, which are in reasonable condition. What base is required under this sort of tiling to allow for...

Fan Vibation on Worcester Bosch Greenstar 18Ri?

So would this not be the first thing that the WB engineer would have checked? What I don't understand is that it was originally only at one fan speed? Now he's 'adjusted' it it does it all the time!

Fan Vibation on Worcester Bosch Greenstar 18Ri?

My mother had one of these installed in December. I was there when they commissioned it and it seemed OK at the time. I went to visit her again last week and noticed that there was a deep vibration when the fan starts up. This wasn't constant, only a momentary effect at a certain fan speed as it...

    Sime Boiler

In defence of Sime I had an 80E Combi fitted in 1999. It hasn't done too badly, 2 PCB's and a new diverter valve in nearly 10 years, I've known many supposedly reliable brands do a lot worse. The main problem was finding an engineer who knows them and is willing to fix them, now I've got someone...

Possible Cause of CH Pump Noise on New Boiler?

Update: got the engineer back and he stripped the pump. No debris in it and water running clean. He says one of the bearings is probably starting to fail and has changed the pump (at our expense obviously). He reckons that because it was mounted horizontally behind the old boiler and now...

Possible Cause of CH Pump Noise on New Boiler?

Thanks, yes that's exactly what it sounds like. So basically this is down to the installers not flushing the pipework thoroughly before refilling the system? I can't believe the pump is starting to fail, as it was completely silent with the old boiler, and the coincidence is just too great.

Possible Cause of CH Pump Noise on New Boiler?

The noise is continuous, it is present from start up all the time the pump is running. It doesn't sound like bearing failure to me, too light, more like a car engine pinking under load. I should have added that since the boiler change, there has been some air in the system, she has bled the two...

Possible Cause of CH Pump Noise on New Boiler?

My mother had a new gas condensing conventional boiler fitted in mid-December (Worcester Greenstar), replacing an ancient Baxi. The pump (a Grundfos) was reused from the original system as it appeared to be in good condition and was only about 5 years old. Have just visited her and found that...

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

Just to update, after removal of AVG (using Avast instead), things do seem to be more stable. Processor is idling at around 28%, but still spikes to 100% very easily, eg when opening a program. But at least the system is usable now. Will leave it for a few days and see how it settles down...

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

OK will try that, sorry which program is SSD? Cancel that...Spybot Search and Destroy. OK I'm on the case.

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

Have killed 4 AVG progs as you described and CPU usage has setled back to around 24-28% (figure bottom left of Task Manager window). But whIat I don't understand is that System Idle Process is now appearing as using 75% of CPU power! How can that be? Chkdev.exe and tskmgr.exe still account for...

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

Sorry, still running at 100% processor capacity. I also switched off AVG as one of it's services seemed to be using 20-30% of processor power. Could this actually be a faulty processor-but if so surely it wouldn't run OK in Safe Mode-so it's got to be software-related?

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

No it doesn't seem to be one app in particular, though services.exe and seticon.exe are accounting for most of the overload! The processor is a Celeron 2.4 Ghz, 1.25GB of RAM. Am disabling seticon and a couple of other minor things at startup, will report back.

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

    Sorry, typical percentages are: taskmgr.exe 13. services.exe 9-46. explorer.exe 3. svchost.exe 7. chkdev.exe 9. seticon.exe 1-20. As you can see, two of them are not stable, but spiking up high regularly (service.exe and seticon.exe).

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

Thanks, I will try SuperAntiSpyware too. I only have one antivirus running on here (AVG), McAfee could be a trace of an older program that has been uninstalled? I was not aware that it was a problem to install more than one anti-spyware prog (as opposed to anti-virus). According to Task...

Malware Causing Processor To Run At 100%

I seem to have a virus or malware infection that is proving resistant to all attempts to remove it and would welcome any advice on what it might be. When booted in Normal Mode the processor load is showing in Task Manager as 100% at all times, making it almost impossible to use the laptop...

    Disk Full, Now 'Won't Boot'?

Well you know what happens. You fix one for a friend, they mention it to their friend, suddenly you have extra friends! Never ceases to amaze me how many people will live with a system that's performing so badly until the chance of getting it looked at for free or at least cheap comes up!

    Disk Full, Now 'Won't Boot'?

I am going to look at an XP system tomorrow where the owner says it was running very slow. She was getting 'disk full' warnings (which she ignored), now she says it won't start up at all-no details beyond that, but she appears to be getting BSOD when she tries to start up, if I understand her...

    ChkDsk Won't Let XP Defrag?

Thank you both for the advice, will run Chkdsk and then defrag again. Have already cleaned up the temp files (usually use CCleaner for this). I presume a few bad sectors doesn't necessarily mean the disk is on it's way out? It's only about 3 years old.
