    Choosing a boiler after quotes

Folks, I am asking for a little feedback from the people working with these boilers day in and day out. We are changing or ancient system and have written quotes from 3 installers. The prices are near to each other so to aid the decision I would appreciated your views on the boilers...

    Asbestos/Cement roof panels "blown"

Is there a way to tell if the corrugated roofing panels contain asbestos? I have just had a look at the top surface and there are loose shards of panel sitting in the ridges.

    Asbestos/Cement roof panels "blown"

I want to put a tiled roof on it as it is part of the house so once done we can expand into it. I think the neighbour wants to do the same as his part of the shed is already lined and I think plastered. However a new roof will take a bit of time so what do I do in the meantime as a running...

    Asbestos/Cement roof panels "blown"

I found that the corrugated asbestos/cement roof tiles appear to have blown during the freeze. I wen into the tool shed and found everything very wet, not damp. I cannot see any water ingress but the roof panels do have what I can only describe as small blisters of the roof that have partially...

    Leaking running outlets

I really have no idea as to the technicalities of roofing and need some clarity on the cause. The gutting for my house (semi detach) has a shared downpipe at the front and back. Both the running outlets leak badly and I think that the problem is due to the facia boards for each house not...

    Vermiculite board

Where can I buy Vermiculite board as I want to line my fireplace with it rather than lining with firebrick. I plan to put in a firebasket with a gap of a couple of inches between the fireplace walls and the fire. Would most builders merchants stock it or is it a specialist product sourced...

    Mortar will not set

I have left the mortar sinc emy last post and I can still rake it out with a blunt edge. I thoroughly soaked the area before applying the mortar so cannot see what I am doing wrong.

    Mortar will not set

It been 24hrs since it was applied and I can easily push an awl over an 1 1/2" into it with very little pressure. I wasn't expecting it to be fully set but I was expecting a little more resisitance than that. The small lumps of discarded mortar than fell down when I applied it can easily...

    Mortar will not set

Why does mortar not go off. I am at my wits end with this. I have tried to mortar up the brickwork around a window 4 times now and every time the mortar will no set. I have tried fresh cement, made sure all equipment inc water was clean and I even resorted to using a bag premixed mortar...

    Repair around window frame

Thanks for the advice. I am going to tidy up the masonry between the DPM and the frame then cover with a liquid membrane to waterproof the brick work.

    Repair around window frame

OK, as I thought moisture is seeping into the plaster work. How can I fix it without refitting every window in the house? I was thinking of some sort of adhesive to hold a damp proof layer onto the brickwork, then repairing as per the original post. Would this work? Any other suggestions?

    Repair around window frame

The plastering around the double glazing in the house we bought was horrendous and out of warranty. The plaster wasn't level with the existing plaster and they had even plastered over the wall paper. I dug out the plaster around the window frame which revealed that they just filled everything...

    Height of firebacks

I just wondered if there was a standard height to clay firebacks? The fireplace will take either a 18" or 20" back (cannot remember the exact dimentions).

    Filling drill holes

Sorry if I am sounding a bit thick. Do I set the rawplugs into over sized holes i.e 10mm hole for 8mm plug or do I drill a 8mm hole?

    Filling drill holes

Looking at the fittings, it looks like 1 hole will be a couple of mm to the side of one of the existing holes and the other hole will be located partly over the existing hole.

    Filling drill holes

I have been tasked with putting up a new roller blind in the spare room. I took the old curtain rail down but the drill holes for the curtain rail are slightly further apart than where the blind holes need to be. The blind does not look right if I try to reposition it (either off center or too...

    Pointing below the DPC

I am a complete noobie in Diynot.com so please forgive me if I have made any errors. I have a 1950's semi and the pointing below the DPC has been repointed at some time in the past. This repair has "blown" with some sections falling away. This prompted me to have a look at repointing the...
