Part P or not Part P, that is the question

I work as an industrial electrician for an engineering company, and our large workshop has an office attached on the side. As I only do industrial work, I am not Part P qualified. But my boss has asked me if I could put all new lighting up in the office, and I just wanted to check if I am...

TT systems and cu set ups

Yeh I think I will have to get one in a separate enclosure as my cu is a Legrand(Tenby?), and I am having trouble finding an RCD of the same make. I am not sure what my incoming fuse is but am I right in saying I need an RCD rated at 100A? And yes I will be testing the RCD after installation :)

TT systems and cu set ups

Thanks for the swift replies lads. I think I will go for the 100mA RCD, is it a straight swap for the double pole main switch? By this I mean does anything else need changing on the board? And I will get the MEB and the supplementory bonding sorted asap.

TT systems and cu set ups

I have read in a different thread that if you have a TT system then you need to have a cu with a time delay 100mA RCD feeding everything, and then a 30mA RCD for all the power circuits etc. (have I got it right?)I have recently been looking at my house electrics (something I should have done...

    Earthing

Great thanks for that. I have some problems of my own then which I will start a new thread about. Cheers

Please could someone explain why the cu will not be suitable for a TT system?

Sizing of earth flylead when using SWA cable

Thanks Adam, just what I needed to know.

Sizing of earth flylead when using SWA cable

Thanks Adam, but what do you mean by the 'front'?

Sizing of earth flylead when using SWA cable

How do you calculate the csa of the earth flylead from the banjo of a SWA cable gland? And do you *always* have to connect a flylead to it, or is it ok sometimes just to make the gland off without a banjo? Like when terminating the cable in a metal clad socket?

    RCD tripping

Good thinking, but like ricicle said, do you not need it supplied from the rcd side of the house CU to protect the armoured cable that is buried underground? There is already an rcd in the garage CU, it is a 40A 30mA unit.

    RCD tripping

    Sorry ricicle, not ricycle.

    RCD tripping

Just checked, and you were spot on RF (and you ricycle :) ), neutral was on the non-rcd protected neutral bar. All sorted now, everything working as it should. Schoolboy error, that will teach me for working this late. I am getting tired, I think I will pack it in for the night before I do...

    RCD tripping

I have just finished my wiring in the new garage, so I put the 40A mcb in the house consumer unit on, then go down the garage and switch the rcd in the garage cu on, everything fine. Then I switch the 32A mcb on for the sockets and it trips the rcd in the house. I leave the 32A mcb and the rcd...

    Garage wiring

Thanks, I did not think of that. The problem I have though is that there are no spare ways in the cu. Another question, if I use the armour of the 10mm cable as the earth, when I terminate it at the garage cu what size tail should I use between the banjo and the earth terminal in the cu...

    Garage wiring

Fed from a 40A mcb in the house, the garage cu has one 32A mcb for a ring circuit and one 6A mcb for the lights. Probably use a heater in the winter, and also various power tools and maybe a welding set.

    Garage wiring

Great. They are decent glands, I *acquired* them from work. I have earthed the socket and the backbox so that should be sufficient then. Oh yeah, the two core SWA that is run to the garage was already in the ground when I moved into the house, I MEGGARed it out and it was fine. If it was...

    Garage wiring

Hi I am in the process of wiring out my new garage and I am not sure on a few things. The cable that is run from the house is a 2core SWA 10mm cable, this is joined in a junction box at the house where 10mm twin & earth is then run to a 40A mcb at the fusebox. What sort of earthing...
