    Suggestions for outdoor sockets

I get you - so you must be able to get IP66 etc sockets that can keep their IP rating with a plug in them - the current doesn't allow that - the cover flap stays upright when a plug is in.

    Suggestions for outdoor sockets

Would I need to hard-wire the 4-gang extension into the current armoured cable (which comes out of my fused, switched spur), or would I need a socket in this enclosure to keep things safe & compliant?

    Suggestions for outdoor sockets

Hey, I don't think I'm reposting a question - this one seems subtly different to most the others - but any suggestions for a large, high IP, socket box for my decking where I can plug adapters as well as normal plugs. The current sockets are those with flaps over the front; I'm looking for...

lesson learnt - properly lidding my oil-based gloss even when painting days apart

even when it's forming a skin within 2-3 minutes? it's like the anti-skinning solvent has gone. It still went on the same, and has so far dried the same, but it takes 5 times longer to paint with. guess I have nothing to loose by trying though ta :-)

Replacing a hedge with a fence... what am I allowed to do?

yeah more I'm thinking about it, a retainer wall with a fence on top might be best. I could let the guy choose the bricks he'll have to look at if it makes him happy o_O

lesson learnt - properly lidding my oil-based gloss even when painting days apart

I think I had sealed the lid improperly, allowing some of the solvent to escape... No smell though and happened in less than a week.. But when I went to open my nice, expensive Crown Trade Gloss today, it had a sort of soft skin on the top, and around the edge of the main body of paint. I'm a...

Replacing a hedge with a fence... what am I allowed to do?

Hey all - just wondering if anyone has any wise pearls of wisdom here: As usual, my ideas fall in a grey space in the available PD and planning advice! I'm considering replacing a ~2m high hedge with a ~2m high fence (i.e. same height), but the trouble is that the 2m measurement is on my side...

    New laptop problem.

you could also try (1) another browser - Google Chrome for example or (2) disable hardware acceleration in your browser of choice - see link below - which might give you time to fix the problem (see second post)...

    Gibabit Network

I got a punchdown tool from SF, cheapish, but not cheapest - if yoyu have more than a few to do, a cheap one if false economy. Radial from a central point is the way to go I would double up all cable runs , but only install one; helps future proof. Maybe even put a run of tough nylon string...

    USB Ports

What sort pf PC? Laptop? Desktop? Age? (USB 1, 2, 3)? are they ports at the front or back? from might imply cheaper than at the back Are they built-in to the motherboard, or add-ins? It might be cheaper to buy a PCI-E USB card, or (re?)use Motherboard headers and get a 3.5in or 5.25in front USB...

How to plumb incoming mains water

It's not the pressure per-se, a single tap has considerable force coming out of it - it's when I turn on a tap of flush a toilet or use the washing machine - as soon as two taps are on - the one furthest away from the stoptap just slows to a dribble. Which made me think - should my important...

How to plumb incoming mains water

Hi, Does anyone know / where to find of any best practice / regulations regarding the order in which to plumb-in the mains-incoming water? i.e. should the set-up be something like this: My house was extended by previous owners, > 20 years ago, and I suspect it's been done wrong. I'm...

Dial Thermostat turning itself up ~~Spooky!

some older ones buzz - could the vibrations be moving the heavier part (the pointy bit? internal construction of the dial?) downwards? Perhaps something has changed recently - with the internal parts - making it buzz more? Or... Who ya' gunna call?

    Managing/recovering from woodworm - a guide!

Hey all, I just thought I would write a post after my recent journey against a fairly severe woodworm infestation.. I’m not all on the mend, have almost completed my renovation and things are on the up after discovering the little f**kers eating away my house. Firstly, if you go...

To nog or not to nog...

haha brill!! I'm hoping for the same.... But Christmas 2020!! I was making great progress - but then we had a baby! I now get one day a week on DIY if I'm lucky!!! Oh yeah, and we decided it would be a good idea to combine the project with the upstairs hallway - the stairs are in the room...

To nog or not to nog...

nice! I had that problem too - and joists having warped and rotated in the middle - only slightly, but enough to mean 2-3mm offsets between sheets. TBH - the ceiling looks mint now it's been skimmed, my plasterer did a great job of covering my "aah, thats how you're meant to do it" learning...

boarding over Celotex/Kingspan on solid wall

I'm in one of those almost uninsulated 1970s dormer beauties... and am DIY renovating most of the house. It's a big house, and so to reduce the volume of air I need to heat and provide insulation, I am planning on framing, insulating, plaster boarding then skimming my walls - i.e. moving all...

To nog or not to nog...

Will your coving - if secured properly - offer support for the short runs between between your joists? That's what I assumed, and no cracks/movement over 1.5 years. I only put noggins in where I joined sheets of PB between joists... I occasionally used some bits of 22mm mdf I had left over to...

    Logging boiler activity

nothing like ignoring a topic for months! I am hoping to know when my boiler is on and off with precision.. My house is very expensive to heat - being a large extended 70s dormer bungalow, with very limited scope for improving roof insulation (within my budget) due to construction 'quirks' of...
