    Remote control for TV

I've long held the suspicion that surround sound is to blame for quiet dialogue on TV, with the voice being focused on the Centre channel more than the Left/Right Front channels, and when the mix is then played back over a stock 2 channel L/R TV speakers, the centre gets lost and thus dialogue...

    Ebola poll

Aaand to drag this thread back up : USian nurse says "It's against my civil rights to be quarantined when I've just returned from treating Ebola victims in Africa!!!" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-29836550 To paraphrase Mr Spock "The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the...

When were the 'best' houses built?

My friends had exactly the same problem with a 1900's era end terrace house. As his kids got older he decided to extend the shallow basement under the house and after a bit of spade work ran out of foundations. I believe he was digging out under the foundations a few feet at a time and refilling...

Full tins of paint do not make good paperweights.

Doing some work in the kitchen/diner I decided to put up 1400grade lining paper then paint over it. Unrolling the paper on the dining room table the damn stuff is like sprung steel so I grab something heavy to stand on one end of it while I measure up - the 1.5ltr tin of paint I just bought...

    Win 7

You might be able to use the key from another copy of Windows 7 but I wouldn't guarantee it. There are pre-installed and vendor specific versions of Windows that need specific keys, but it's worth a try. If it doesnt you shouldnt need to go to the trouble of a DBan or diskwipe, Win7 install...

Has France got this right ?

Friends of mine emigrated to France last year and unfortunately one of them was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer. The French health service are paying for her treatment at (I'm told) 1900 euro's per month (might have been 19,000 but I probably misheard) - in addition to her pre-existing...

    Here we go again!

I suppose as as dedicated conspiracy theorist you can tell me? 'Cos when I worked for one of the UKs biggest defense contractors a few years back wages were low and everything was done on a shoestring budget, and according to the ex-forces blokes who worked there things were much the same in the...

    Here we go again!

Sorry I have to ask - whose military industrial complex is getting more money? The British armed forces have been slowly getting smaller and smaller over the years, and the industries supporting them have experienced a similar decline. So if all this business in the middle east is just a...

    Scottish independence.

On a tangent, if any country, started printing money that was identical to that of another country - essentially counterfeit notes - what could be done about it short of international blockade and/or war?

Wall mount TV Power lead too short - Options?

If you have a kettle/PC lead (technically a kettle plug is slightly different as it's notched and designed for higher temperatures, but many people call your average IEC/Euro connector for a PC a kettle lead even when it's not) you won't need the socket, but if you don't have a lead you'd need...

Wall mount TV Power lead too short - Options?

How about replacing the 13A plug on the end of the TV power cable with an IEC/Euro plug (eg http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/6a-euro-line-plug-ft64u & http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/6a-euro-line-socket-n82cx ) which is a lot slimmer and suitable as an inline connector? You can then use a normal PC/Kettle...

    Which brake pads?

Pagid is an OEM supplier so I'd use them by preference, though if I was putting pads in a car I intended to drive fast I'd be using Greenstuff or Ferodo/Mintex pads.

    Tile/Worktop trim?

I can't see your pics, but was it sort of triangular plastic trim about an inch and a half high with a flexible edges and used as an upstand? If so you might be able to find it at B&Q. I got some from there a few years back when refurbishing the kitchen in my flat.
