    Dampness in brick shed

Posted 2 more pics. This is the corner from the outside. You can see it has drainage along the side and a down pipe. The second pic is the rear of the shed. As far as I can see now only the top 1/4 is rendered on that side. The wall runs practically up against the garden boundary fence. Any...

    Dampness in brick shed

Yes it is, with simple render. Was considering adding a layer of insulation boards, and re-skimming. Want to eventually use it as an office. But very cold in there right now and it's builds up condensation. Which I think is the picture of water on the floor. Floor tiles are freezing. Would the...

    Dampness in brick shed

I have a brick shed attached to my house via a lean-to. Bought the house in June last year, no problems until the colder weather kicked in. I noticed a condensation problem on the back wall. Now I've seen mold growing on stored furniture. I have posted some pictures. I wonder if anyone can give...

    Valve running to toilet cistern

Hi all. I have a valve section that runs into the base of the cistern. On Sunday the turning knob broke of and it sprung a leak. I was able to shut the water supply down from a small 'turn screw valve' at the bottom of the pipe. So I have mains water still, just no water can flow up to the...

    Waxing old scaffold boards

Thanks 'Vic' - this helps and I know is an option to still wax and get a smooth finish. Thanks 'Nige' - correct it's a water based wax. Am I making a mistake with that product do you think? Is there something you recommend as a pro?

    Waxing old scaffold boards

Hi all. In the middle of a project working on some old scaffold boards. I had them all sanded down to a fine finish and started to wax them. I am using Ronseal Interior Wax Dark Oak. I did a test over one side and what I noticed after leaving it to dry, was my once smooth board, is now rough...

Rainfall shower - connect chrome pipe to taps outlet

Thanks Jim and Madrab. What if that top section was taken off - the bit with the hose and placeholder for the head? At least then I'd be central. Also, how would I even connect a chrome pipe to that? The pipe would have no thread at either end for example. Basically if I have a length of...

Rainfall shower - connect chrome pipe to taps outlet

I moved into new home recently and want to connect up my rainfall shower head. Only thing is I don't want to use a flexible hose this time. I want to put in a proper chrome pipe, like the picture. My question is how do I connect a chrome pipe to the taps? Is there a connector I can buy? Do I...

    Stone cottage and breached chimney

Hi all. I have moved attention to the opposite side of this wall now where the burner is. The chimney has been swept, capped and lined with a new flue. What I would like some advice on is the plaster/render at the back of the burner. Should I remove the plaster and re-render or leave as-is and...

    Stone cottage and breached chimney

Thanks. Do I need to consider cleaning that stone wall? Could it even clean up? Or as long as i have fixed the chimney issues, I could just re-plasterboard? Any suggestions/advice appreciated?

Woodworm - treat or replace floorboards?

Thanks. Would you suggest just replacing them? Did you see any damage to your joists? Would you say these look in bad shape? How much was the pest control?

Woodworm - treat or replace floorboards?

I am renovating a cottage and pulled out the old upstairs carpets to reveal the old floor boards. Most seem in good shape but I'm no expert. I have taken some pics here. Can anyone please advise the following: 1. if this is a woodworm issue 2. what is the best way to treat 3. should I just...

    Stone cottage and breached chimney

There is no cap in the chimney. The chimney would be dead center in that wall. The wood burner is the other side of that wall and it was just full of water. Sorry if 'breached' is the wrong terminology. If I recall, he reckoned the cause was soot and water coming through the mortar.

    Stone cottage and breached chimney

I am renovating a 100 year old stone cottage in Ireland. The property has not been lived in for about 5 years so there was a big condensation/damp problem. After pulling back some of the plasterboard (within an extension connected to the 100 year part) I could see that the base of the old stone...
