    recurring Weeds between patio slabs

Pathclear is good, because it lasts the whole season, not impressed with it in the spray bottles though, I prefer to mix it in watering can, and pour in the cracks that way. Rather than lifting the slabs, and laying some weed proof membrane, try sqeezing some strips of membrane down the gaps...

    Ivy on trees...and elsewhere.

There is another thread on this subject. Use SBK, mixed with Paraffin.

    Moss removal

Armillotox is good for the job. It is difficult to remove algae from slabs without using chemical means in my opinion.

Can I increase the size of my alcoves?

This would be a major job in my view, not a job for a novice. I think you should contact the Local Authority Building Inspector for advice.

cooker - integrated or free standing?

I sold cookers for many years. In my opinion there are a lot of advantages in a freestanding cooker. It can be easily removed for cleaning purposes, and if it is necessary to replace it, the freestanding cooker is very easily removed.

    Help! Patio advice needed :)

I have relaid my garden path this week. It was originally laid by my late father-in-law 60 years ago. There was no sand under the slabs, they were laid on coal slack. And it has lasted all these years. I noticed in Focus today that they are now selling Slab Mix, in bags. It is a mixture...

    Growing Potatoes

dg 123 I admire your enterprise, and hope you have a great crop, you should have no problems with frosts now, slugs are the biggest problem now in my opinion. What we grow as individuals may seem quite small, but if every gardener still grew their own vegetables, I am sure it would make a huge...

    Growing Potatoes

I think this question is interesting. I remember the time when every household grew their own potatoes, and people of my age new exactly how to grow potatoes. Sadly most gardens now seem to concentrate on lawns, flower borders etc, and the art of home vegetable growing is dying. I hope your...

    Lifting patio slabs?

I have been doing this job today, and used a spade to lift the slabs. No problems at all. Incidentally, they were bedded on coal slack. Very popular and effective in the days when we all used coal. :D

    extending conrete post

To do the job neatly, so that the trellis panels are secure, will be very difficult in my opinion.

    Too much seed?

I tried a spreader once, and did not get on too well with it. I think it is just as easy to scatter it by hand. I mixed the seed with sharp sand before scattering.

    Dirty Tiles

I would not put polish on ceramic tiles. It could make them dangerously slippy. Regret to say that in my opinion there is not much you can do about it. Black floors like black cars show up all the dirt. I think you need to ascertain the quickest easiest method to clean them. Probably a...

The gloss was not very shiny in my opinion, and also the brush marks were quite prominent, although I used good quality brushes

removing tiles around an enamel bath

If it is an enamel bath, are you sure it is a burn? Or is it rust coming through. Removing the first tile has to be done carefully, after one has been removed, should not be a problem to remove the rest. I would score it with a diamond tipped cutter, then lightly tap with a hammer and chisel.

    Mould

I use Flash Gel with bleach for the purpose. Quite effective. But read the instructions to make sure that it will not damage the surface of the bath. But if you apply it carefully just on the sealant, should not be a problem.

Making use of my water butt

I doubt if you would be able to use the pressure washer by just connecting to the water butt. I should think it would not be too difficult to fix a suitable pump. But, is it worth the bother, is your water butt large enough to cope, and leave you enough water for the garden as well...

    What hedge?

Privet although much maligned,is quick growing, needs cutting regularly, but still makes a good hedge in my opinion, and it is very adaptable, can be shaped, cut back hard if necessary. It make a neat hedge. I have noticed that Photinia Red Robin is now being sold as a hedging plant. I think...
