    walls

I would use extra lights and mirrors. In a few years, you may find dark panelling is back in fashion, then you will be pleased with it.

Plasti-Kote Spray paint on light fittings

This spray paint is not easy to use in my opinion. You might get on better using a brushed paint.

    butting wallpaper..what's the secret!!

I have never experienced an overlap, it is usually shrinkage that is the problem. The best way is to read the paste manufacturers instructions carefully, and carry them out. Also don't be too heavy with the seam roller, it can show up when the paper is dry.

    Painting Bathroom Tiles

I have painted tiles in the past, but was disappointed with the results. Remember also that any oil based paints will gradually deteriorate, then if she complains you will have the job to do again. Have you considered some tile transfers? there are quite a lot about in DIY stores

Best way to grow a privet hedge?

Privet hedges are easy. They will grow quite easily from cuttings. It is difficult to stop them growing. :) If they get leggy, they can be cut back drastically, seems to do them no harm.

    Ivy removal

I was giving a tip which worked for me. Spray it with a mixture of SBK and paraffin when it is dormant. You need a mask and goggles of course.

    wood fillers

I have used Polyfilla Wood filler, and found it satisfactory. I do not think it is expensive. But most DIY Stores have own brand fillers which are cheaper

    painting over vinyl

Personally, I would not try it. If it was not successful, there would be even more work removing the paint, then the vinyl, which would be a nasty little job. I would try peeling the vinyl off.

White powder coming up from ceramic tile flooring...........

We had the same problem with some quarry tiles a few years ago. An old builder gave me a tip which worked. Wash it over with vinegar.

Creda Capri Gas Oven, Pilot light only

Pilot light may need cleaning and adjusting, should be done by a Corgi installer. Certainly worth having it fixed.

    Cavity Walls

I am considering cavity wall insulation. But, I have some electric cable inside the cavity. This was fed in from the meter which is mounted on the wall, and taken to the upper floor, and fished out, and used to intall a new ring circuit. Would the insulation affect this?

Whats best powder, tablets or liquid for washing machines?

We always use powder. It is worth bearing in mind that powder comes in cardboard cartons that are recyclable. Liquid containers are plastic, and far more difficult to recycle. We should if possible consider enviromental issues when possible.

Has anyone ever designed and built their own shed ??

When I moved into this house 48 years ago now, there was a wooden garage that was erected in 1939. About 25 years ago, we replaced the garage with a concrete one, so I constructed a shed from the t&g boards of the old garage. I made it with a sloping roof into which I let a few plastic panels...

I was contemplating this a few years ago, but then a friend warned me, that I would have no privacy. Friends and relatives would constantly asking to borrow the pit. I though this waa wise advice, so did not do it.

    ceilings

I had this problem a few years ago now, before Smooth Over etc, were available, so I covered the ceiling with t & g cladding, which I found reasonably cheap to do. It was quite simple to screw battens to the joists, and then do the cladding. I finished it with 2 coats of varnish, and have...

    Plastering after rewiring

Why I posted this topic in the first place, because the job I was involved with in redecorating etc, was chases in several rooms, from the ceiling down to the skirting board. What occurred to me was that very little skill is needed to run a plastering trowel down the wall to get the plaster...

    Plastering after rewiring

Interesting replies, and they confirm what I suspected. But, I think it would be a great benefit to householders, if electricians would have a little training in this matter, and would take a little more care, in the patching up.

    Plastering after rewiring

Are electricians given any training in plastering? I have just been helping a relative to redecorate after a rewiring. A lot of work could have been avoided, if the electrician had taken a little more care and replastered the cut out channels more neatly. It would have saved a lot of...
