    Chasing wall for cables...

Just removing the old kitchen for a replacement and noticed that some of the cables have been run from the box locations above the worktop to below it by what looks like drilling a 20mm odd hole down behind the plaster from the top and another one up from the bottom. The cable has then been fed...

    Capping off old radiator pipe...

We need to remove a rad from its current position and cap off the pipes that come from under the floor screed ready for new flooring to go down. So far I have excavated around the current pipe by about an inch down all round: I was planning to cut this off lower than the surrounding...

    Lintel and end bearing

Superb! Thanks for that. There are obstructions so this sounds like the solution. Building control are involved obviously so would the be likely to require structural calcs for this beam?

    Lintel and end bearing

I need a lintel to span an opening of 1830 mm between my garage wall and the house wall. This will support the wall plate for a new pitch roof between the two. I've had some drawings done and due to the locations of other supports in the house wall its not possible to cut into it to give the...

    Danfoss TP5000RF and RX1 issue

Thought it had been getting a bit chilly in the house recently and then today I noticed that the little flame symbol was on on the TP5000RF but the red light wasn't on on the RX1 box mounted next to the boiler. Pushing the RX1 button turns the heating on showing that the RX1 module has power...

Shed strip foundations, DPC and vermin protection...

I'm in the process of building a 2.7m x 1.8m timber shed in the garden. The floor of the shed is made from a 2"x4" treated timber frame followed by a damp proof membrane and then topped with 18mm Ply. For the base I was planning on having 3 concrete strip foundations (one every 1.3m or so...

IP65 GU10 downlighter over shower enclosure...

Actually while I think of it too... The shower pump is an Aqualisa Quartz jobbie mounted in the loft and fed from an 3A Switched FCU in the airing cupboard off the upstairs ring. Should this have a DP pull cord isolator switch in the bathroom like the previous electric shower over the bath...

IP65 GU10 downlighter over shower enclosure...

We have recently added a shower enclosure to a previously unused corner of the bathroom. Currently there is one of these fittings mounted in the ceiling above the enclosure with a CFL bulb: http://www.jcc-lighting.co.uk/product_JC94010 Is this acceptable? Or does it need to be changed to...

    Coaxial water meter connection...

What sort of fitting would I need to buy to connect to a manifold (coaxial) style water meter such as this one: http://www.johnsonvalves.co.uk/Data/Data%20Sheet%20No.%2001.03%20-%20V210%20Water%20Meter.pdf I see the connection is a single 1.5" BSP thread and they are designed to go in...

    Architect fees...

I've just got a quote back from an architect for a small infill extension that I wish to have built. I have supplied dimensioned drawings of the current layout and the layout that I require in the extended area. Total floor area of the extension will be 4m^2. Do these fees seem about...

    Excessive gas consumption

    I thought burning 1m3 of gas gave approx 11.06kWh which makes 38m3 roughly 420kWh. 420/35 = 12 hours a day. http://www.carbontrust.co.uk/resource/energy_units/default.htm

    Shower trap syphoning...

I don't think the seal can be that big as its this type of waste: I can probably manage to change the waste on the shower looking at it. Whats the best type of waste to go for on it?

    Shower trap syphoning...

I swung by wickes and bought a "hunter plastics gurglemaster II" basically its an in line air admittance valve: I put this in line with the existing sink trap as the hepvo doesnt fit within the semi pedestal on the sink. Much to my surprise it seems to work :D

    Shower trap syphoning...

How does that fix it then? Does it mix air in with the water coming down from the sink?

    Shower trap syphoning...

nope the basin waste is a standard 32mm trap like this kinda thing:

    Shower trap syphoning...

The basin and shower are connected on the same 40mm pipe that runs to the waste stack in the bathroom. Starting from the stack there is a 3m run of 40mm pipe, then a T directly below the basin where the 32mm waste from the basin joins then 1m of 40mm pipe to the shower. If the sink is...

    Aqualisa Quartz Digital Question

I assume its because the pump has some serious suction behind it. Therefore if you T off the bath pipes and happened to open the bath taps while the shower was on it would just suck in air through the open bath taps. That could be a load of rubbish though! :)
