    Mastic remover

I am feeling rather pleased with myself as I have used a fine chisel to get the worst off, then used a nylon scourer, rubbing ever so lightly of course, with a little Cif, and hey presto it has all come off. It's taken practically all afternoon, but now I can let it dry out completely before...

    Mastic remover

What seems to have happened is that there was already moisture in the gap before I used the sealant, and although I covered it up with polythene afterwards, I think the sealant just stayed runny and as a result it has just trickled out. It looks a bit of a mess but I will try using a small...

    Mastic remover

Does anyone know how to remove white mastic/sealant which has ended up making rather a mess over my UPVC door frame? I used it to try and re-seal a gap between threshold step and frame, but the rain has washed it out and it is now all over the step and flashing underneath. I have an idea that...

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

Actually, forget the last comment as I realise that it's exactly the same principle, regardless of whether the CFL is vertical or horizontal. Sorry!

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

Ah but.... in our ceiling light fittings which take two regular 40w bulbs, the lamp is horizontal as opposed to vertical, so maybe this would make a difference in terms of electronics and heat dispersal. Fascinating though this subject is, I think I'd better call it a day and just get on with...

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

Thanks for all the advice - and sorry to be a bit 'blonde' (which I am!), but I wanted to make sure that I didn't cause any damage to my light fittings. I will now go and put back all the energy saving bulbs that I have removed in panic!

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

Sorry to go back over old stuff, but just to clarify, is it definitely OK to replace a standard 40w bulb with Philips energy saver 11w, which is designed to give out equivalent of 60w light, as opposed to the 9w/40 one????

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

Some are better than others, and the Phillips ones are definitely nearer 50w than 60w in terms of brightness, and there are also some variations with the time they take to come on, with some taking a minute or two to achieve full brightness. I can't say I'm impressed, but if they save me money...

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

Yes, as I have discovered, they are too big for some of our globe-style wall lights, but they are OK for the ceiling domes which completely hide the bulbs. Apart from the brightness factor, I was just a bit concerned about having the equivalent of two 60w bulbs in fittings that are designed for...

Low energy light bulbs or WATT?

My economy-conscious other half has invested in a bulk buy of low energy bulbs. The box describes them as 11w, and a suitable alternative for regular 60w bulbs, but most of our ceiling light fittings take two 40w bulbs. My partner says its OK to use the ones he has bought as they are in fact...

    Bang Bang, then it died.

All is well - boiler working so we now have heating and hot water again. Thanks again for the input - will definitely use this forum again!

Perhaps the BG man is telling porkies - the pump he has used is a blue one and the ones I was looking up are red, but then he did mention that Grundfos are making pumps especially for BGas - which is why they are blue in colour presumably. It has got British Gas written on it, and it says...

I looked up the prices myself and the one he is using is UPS 1560 which costs about 65 quid, whereas the UPE 1560 is over £200. So presumably he is doing as he is told!!

    Bang Bang, then it died.

BG man has bought a replacement pump - Grundfos 1560 - although he is having problems removing the existing one which appears to be resisting all attempts at the moment. I asked about Alpha Pro etc. but they would only fit this as a replacement for an existing Alpha Pro. Seems logical enough...

    Bang Bang, then it died.

The BG man is here now, so I'll have a chat and let you know what he says!

Thanks - I have been looking up about central heating pumps and had the same thought. I suspect good old B.G. used a fairly cheap one in the first place and I was wondering whether to ask about Grundfos Alpha Pro as it seems more energy efficient.

    Bang Bang, then it died.

I was woken early this morning by a terrific banging noise - thought someone was trying to break down the door! Traced the noise to the airing cupboard which houses our Baxi Solo 2 boiler, which sounded as if it was going to explode. On closer inspection, noticed smoke coming from the Myson...
